I just thought i would share an article on Street Commodores March 2006, its the issue with the Bresciani beast PLATNM on the cover.
Basically what they did was test several brands of oils, synthetic and semi synthetic, 18 in total from the expensive to the not so expensive. This involved testing the oils film strength on a bearing with a 'lubricant test machine'. Basically they apply pressure/weight and the bearing starts to scar/scratch as a result of metal rubbing. This was done with a new bearing on every test. For full results read the article.
Anyway i don't want to go into heavy details and im not being biased, the results were surprising as shown by the pictures of the bearings after the test. I recommend that you read this issue in Street Commodores as it shows that top dollar may not always be top quality.
The 4 oils that performed the best were:
Royal Purple 10-40 Multigrade synthetic (no surprise) $79.99
Royal Purple R51 (no surprise again) $30.00 per litre
Valvoline Durablend 10-40 synthetic blend (this was very surprising) $41.99
Penrite Synthetic 5 5W-60 $74.99
The rest include very expensive oils and not so expensive but they all came in average based on how much ware/scarring the bearing had after the test was conducted:
Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 $47.99
Gulf Western Ultra 15W-50 $25.99
Penziol GT Performance 10-40 $37.99
Fuchs Titan Supersyn MB 5W-30 $49.99
Motul 0W-40 $92.99
Motul Turbolight 10W-40 $49.99
Elf Excellium GP 5W-40 $54.99
Mobil1 0W-40 $89.99
Mobil Synth S $34.99
Penrite HPR 5 Semi Synthetic 5W-40
Red Line Synthetic 5W-40 $119.99
Shell Helix Plus Semi 15W-50 $26.99
Elf Competition GT 10W-40 $39.99
Castrol Formula R 0W-40 $67.99
Anyway i thought i would share with you guys and see what you thought.
Cheers
John

Speaking of which, what oil did you use in the engine that I bought Kris?
I read that article and was very suprised by valvoline.
I have always used The Shell Helix Plus Smi Synthetic in my engines in the past.
Royal Purple have always had a great name in a HP applications.
When it come to your engine, $80 is cheap insurance I reckon.

17-02-06, 18:37 GMT+10#18 Please do take the tests with a pinch of salt.
They hardly simulate real engine conditions.
www.bobistheoilguy.com (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com) is a good place to start to know whats good and whats not.
Do remember oil pressure and viscosity is to be matched to the application.
Saying that, the oils to keep away from are the new 'economy' light weight oils.

17-02-06, 21:52 GMT+10#20 The tests only take in one part of what an oil does, they say it themselves. They claim they will do a more comprehensive test soon. I wouldnt read too much into this test. But hey thats me
