so much for not being able to strip gears in the mx7 eh? not sure whether or not a bearing failed first or not, will find out soon. It's 3rd gear too for those wondering.

Nice work, wonder if the hard casing was gone, those MX7's had dodgy hard casing on some of the gears!

450-480 engine HP, 350ish at wheels... no idea abotu casing, will take to a shop tomorrow and see what they say, had it in the gear (didn't grind it) and got on the throttle, lasted about a 1sec than SNAP BANG, and well, it went down hill from there....

Back onto this hard casing issue. I think the reason, it wears/fails is due to excessive heat inside the gearbox. The R33 boxes take around 4L total, compared to the 2.4 of the MX7. 2.4L will get hot very quickly inside a high hp engine and break down quickly. Especially on BT1 chaser vehicles. I think if Nissan/Holden said change oil every 12months, the MX7 boxes would have faired a little better in age. Tempest, was your box noisy at all, before it failed? Or was it a dead quiet smooth box?

I'd say by him mentioning BT1's he means they got driven hard and copped a flogging. I would never buy an ex police car as the forty thousand kays or so they do are the equivelent of about 200k's normal driving I reckon. Cheers Imtorqing

Or was it a dead quiet smooth box? 2 things. 1. how are bt1's different? 2. What inside the box affects oil capacity. I am looking into swapping over the mx7 and r33 bellhousings and as far as i can see they are identical. But if i am going to reduce the oil capacity by this changeover i am not going to even bother.
