Alright, heres the situation.
Have a HQ sedan. They look tough.
Spending around 10-11k on engine... would this put me into the 10s?
Ive been considering going for a big block for sheer torque. Also alot of big blocks come standard with forged crank, rods and pistons and they are quite cheap. Rebuilders can be picked up for 3-4 thousand.
I'm wanting a fairly good cruiser aswell as a quick car... so i would prefer a reasonably low convertor of around 3000rpm... and diff gears between 3.5 - 3.9
Do you think this is achieveable?

with money anythings achievable :P
are you staying n/a, or going blown ?

i am going to assume its holden v8's your talking about !
are you going to force it or N/a ?... with turbos/blower and those cc's that sought of power is easier obtained. Its the other things needed to be considered to get that big heavy fella up the strip

go 400ci blown or turbo with a 9", TH350 and good suspension setup - absolutely possible.

I'd like to go 400 or so... but by the time you spend the money on a blower and a motor to handle that blower, its well over budget.
Looking at blowers, most of them are around $6000. Then a motor to handle that sort of power youre probably looking around the 10k mark.
I know you need the goodies to run fast RELIABLE times... just not sure if its possible for the money or not. Id rather push alot of power out of a big 8 than a small 6.

go to the rocket industries site and look at the engine packages they do

Go a 400 with a big shot of NOS and you will be in the 10's...
I pressume the 10 / 11k does not include driveline?

10 / 11K not including drive line.
I dont want a shot of nos. Its cheating! No use saying your car does 10s with nitrous or 12's without.

NOS - a peice of equipment used to increase engine power and torque
Turbo - a peice of equipment used to increase engine power and torque
Blower - a peice of equipment used to increase engine power and torque
We must all be cheating...

Ever considered starting off slowly getting a fully worked 400 then think about a blower later, at least the engine will be ready for it. Or would you prefer to do it once, do it right?

Yeah but nitrous is using a bottled gas that would not normally be in a car to force your engine to work harder. Whereas a Turbo or a Blower is a MECHANICAL item using the engines own momentum to force natural AIR into your engine therefore working harder. Its all natural you see none of this artificial fake crap.

14-01-06, 13:33 GMT+10#12 I suppose its not cheating... i meant that i'd rather have a car that was fast all of the time, even whilst been street driven. A turbo'd or blown car will have that power all day every day (possibly more or less depending on boost). Cant exactly run nitrous every friday night on the street.
Also, yes could build a 400 up as a tough motor, but it would be down on compression whilst waiting for a supercharger..
Decisions are too hard.

14-01-06, 15:06 GMT+10#13 try the Trading Post, I see some awesome donks in there for nicks, some are even disassembled for inspection!

14-01-06, 15:22 GMT+10#14 seeing as it is a N/A V8, it will struggle to do it through a full exhaust system,
so it will never be a true 10 sec street car, so i don't think it matters if you use
Nitrous or not. 10 grand doesn't go very far though, spend the money on th rolla
what about a stocky bottom end Vn 5 litre, head stud kit and put a non rolller Gt42 on it
If you do it yourself, reverse some stocky cast headers maybe it could be done
cheers

14-01-06, 15:29 GMT+10#15 build a big block if you wanna keep a low converter and good highway gears.
a mate of mine rebuilt his big block himself, just in parts and machining he spent $7500, but made 281rwkw naturally aspirated. he ran a **** ignition on street tyres, stalling on the track when he loaded up. he then went on after stalling to run a 12.8 at 122mph in a 71 stingray.
big block is where the power is, that's what id be doing if i could do it again

Yeah the rolla is going soon... its an 11sec car... but i want to go faster
Epitaph that sounds pretty good.
I was at the bottle shop before and there was a tubbed, blown corvette. I could even do a stockish 350 and whack a blower on it... itd sound tough haha

14-01-06, 18:10 GMT+10#18 I was speaking to Neil Burns(tasman motorsportand Brocky's 80's engine builder) the other day about an 8 and he said for a 355 stroker to get around 380hp it would be between $5G and $8G depending on how reliable/tough you want it.

and where another 150kgs or so is... a small block esp a stroker should propel a hq down easy... why stay na ??? strap a charger on the bitch! haddads hq was running mid 10s with a basic 355 with a charger, 350 chev would be a walk inthe park

14-01-06, 18:23 GMT+10#20 With a big car like that, just go for a big block. We have a GM big block crate motor for sale at work, its 502ci and makes 502hp, runs low compression, alloy heads, 950 holley etc, can even run on normal unleaded, comes with 1 year factory warranty and is only $13K.
Why would you want anything else
