Hi
I have an 82 corolla on my mates farm which we thrash around some weekends. My mate had one also a while ago which he welded the diff in, and it was alot more fun to drive. So anyone with experience in welding a diff can you please give some advice.
Do i have to reemove the diff or diff centre to weld it, what part do i weld, is a MIG welder all i need? is there anything else i shud know?
thanks heaps

get someone to do it that knows how and ask them to show you .... other wise you will just wreck it ....
you have to have the spider gears welded up which are cast cogs and proper burn in is needed..... find some one who is into mud bashing vehicles or speedway .... thats who used to do my banjo torries

the corolla centre is pretty easy to weld as it has a large opening exposing the spider gears.
remove the centre.
soak it in thinner or some sort of solvent to remove all the oil from it,this will give you the best chance of good penetration.
now you want a mig turned up as high as it will go.
crank it where each gear joins the next one, being careful not to weld it all to the carrier.
as far as the welding goes start right down in the join and work around in slow circles.

b/c VLT's r designed to be thrashed, redlined every gear, auto boxes stalled to the point of melt down!!!!
and skipping around a corner would be sik fun

hes a bad ass, drives around with no rear brakes lol
all he does is roll forward slowly , then jump on the accelerator and brakes and it cranks out sideways and crabs down the road no worries, gets the revs up real high without brakes lol
many streets have huge fishies and doeys from him lol

10-01-06, 14:46 GMT+10#18 oh, and another thing, the first time he welded it, he used a stick welder, and it broke straight away...
so he took it to his work , and filled it up with bolts and crap, then migged the **** outta it, lasted a long time

10-01-06, 15:07 GMT+10#20 dave vl diffs are hard to weld as they only have a small opening to get at the spider gears.
that means less acurate welding and less penetration=easily broken
