I think from memory it is 94db
Also they use a db counter and get your car to rev at 3000rpm and take a reading from 1 metre away.
You can get a certificate from an exhaust shop to say that it is under the legal limit.

In VIC its 90db, unsure what the NSW regulations are....Got done for 99db last week (standard manifold, standard cat, muffler in middle and hotdog at rear)...In VIC they rev the car to 4000rpm and use a testing device, but again the NSW rules may be different

29-12-05, 16:05 GMT+10#15 10. Noise emissions from motor vehicles
(1) In this regulation, "dB(A)" means the A-weighted
sound pressure level expressed in decibels.
(2) For the purposes of sections 48B and 48D(3A) of
the Act, a passenger vehicle must not emit noise
exceeding the following relevant level—
Date of manufacture Noise Level [dB(A)]
Before 1 November 1983 96 dB(A)
On or After 1 November 1983 90 dB(A)
From:
Environment Protection (Vehicle Emissions) Regulations 2003
It varies on how many revs when tested depending on what sort of vehicle is being tested.
It is all in the Act if you're really really really bored.

29-12-05, 16:23 GMT+10#16 mm annoying they bust cars like VLs with a 3" that if anything are a bit droney.. yet a harley flies past on full noise and it's quite ok coz they come from the factory loud..
I dont think my ears or environment distinguish or care what year a car or bike was produced.. Vls aren't loud cars.. even when worked (except you screamer pipe boys lol)..

29-12-05, 17:38 GMT+10#17 I highly doubt that an exhaust shop would pass a 92 dB reading. For every 2dB the noise doubles. eg: 92dB is actually double what 90dB is.
They wouldnt risk losing their license for that.
They rev your car to 3/4 of maximum power. eg: my 5 litre got done at 3000rpm... they check in the book for engine capacity etc as to how hard to rev it.
