hello everyone...
i know you are all probably sick about talking about the problems with vl's, but i need to find out what is wrong with mine. 3 weeks ago i bought my second car, replacing my old honda civic 87 which i only had for 1 month. happy with what i paid for, i went on my merry way with the new beast. that all changed last monday, when driving home from work the car felt like it was shaking a little bit, and it had absolutely no power. i still had power steering and all, nut my foot was on the floor and was getting slower. it sounded sick, like it was almost going to stall, and eventually died. i called racq and got towed back home. they did a quick check over and so did a 3rd year apprentice friend of mine and everything appears to be ok, sparks, battery good, etc, etc, etc, all working condition.
it blows no smoke, it turns over and dies straight away now, so i was just tryin to find out the problem, cuz i dont want 2 pay a moblile machenic anythin, cuz he might say " u need a auto-electrician" or sumthin, waste of money and im all ready poor....
i've heard of CAS(crank angle sensor??????) n dizzy's but dont know wat they are, if u think thats the problem could you tell me where they are?
thanks -johnno-

the air flow metre is the balck box at the right front side of your engine bay my bet it's that. unscrew and have look at the wires to see if they are snapped behind the metal filter

u d**k thats the air box. the AFM is the bit where the plug puggs into, just before the air box

tps is only for the gearbox doesnt run the engine.and afm causes all different problems aswell. but i reckon its the fuel pump **** itself test that first take the fuel line off and turn on the ignition and fuel should piss out if it only dribbles its the pump.

it also does the engine, i have fixed 5 cars now by doing the adjustment of the tps, just gotta know what the motor sounds like or what its doing to know if its the prob,
did u check ur timing cause it sounds like the bolt came loose and retarded it self just enough to slow u down. also pull the top timing cover off and have a look where the marks line up with the crank pully, could of jumed a tooth.
has it had a belt on it, i didnt beleve timing belts could strech, my 2.5 has been sitting around for approx 3 yr's and it used to advance retard minewhile the cas (diffrent to the 3l) was fully advanced, i dont beleve this is your problem but worth a look anyways.

Buddy, you don't know me I don't know you no need to swear at strangers. When my afm stuffed up I bought a second hand one that included the box. When I said box I mean air flow metre. Don't jump to conclusions. Didn't wanna get in to too much detail.

tps only runs gearbox.
once again it does both, the motor sees a on or off sig, if at idle it sees an off sig ( i think) it will play up and thus resulting in needing adjustment.
what u will notice is like a funny miss apon giving it revs than it will come good tps is out
tps does auto box and motor. this is why there are 2 plugs and when a manual is installed there is only one plug off the tps.....
sorry dude i think tps is not at foult in this instance but it was worth a check anyways want it?

07-12-05, 18:45 GMT+10#17 From what I've gathered the R31 skyline has better built CAS item than the one in the VLs. Just go to a wrecker or one of those PICK A PART place. Remember to bring a 8mm socket with extension and a phillip screw driver.

08-12-05, 05:56 GMT+10#18 some times its not the crank angle sensor i rember manny times after i washed my motor (cover the dizzey) it used to swamp with water and it just needed a good blow out with compressed air. water enters via the plug which also bugges the plug. pull the cap off remove the plate and blow off the optics and plate, give this a tri.

we had to do this 2 mine... best thing to do is make a small gasket outa double sided tape... i know that sounds funny.... but it really does work...

Why do you think its called a Throttle Position Switch?
The motor reads from this to calculate A/F ratios along with all the other input sensors like CAS, AFM and o2 Sensor.......
My Haltech came with its own TPS mate so how in the f uck does that even come close to relating to the gearbox?
If the TPS is moving with the throttle butterfly the car will run like ****, end of story! It must be fixed in place and calibrated.
