This is my 1987 vl berlina turbo that has been built over the last two years. The car was originally a 5 speed white berlina with maroon trim which i traded for a vn with my dad. It was stock as a rock with a fresh engine and had been well looked after. It also sported 15" rims. For starters i fitted a 3 inch exhaust and front mount cooler, 16" vs ss rims, then hi-flowed the turbo put on a bigger fuel pump and wound the boost up to 15psi. I then had the car painted in a custom 2k orange mix by good friend scott ormerod who also fitted the calais front and all new bumper bars and moulds. I then fitted up some 17" roh blade rims. The engine started showing signs of imminent failure because of 15psi and no aftermarket computer and promptly blew a head gasket 3 days after a local drag meet at which it posted a 8.84 1/8 mile time. A subsequent pull-down of the engine revealed six broken rings, two melted pistons, two bent conrods and a head that looked like a victim of chernobyl. The decision was made to built it right the second time around and a call was put in to local engine guru brian cassar of moe engines. After telling brian what i wanted i left it in his hands. (along with a sizeable amount of cash) Brian looked at countless blocks before deciding on the one that he used, it was then treated to the following: chemical bath sonic test crack test bored & honed decked blue-printed & balanced fully prepped crank CP forged race pistons fully prepped rods ARP rod bolts ACL race bearings ARP mains stud kit ported & polished head with 3-angle valve grind custom valves crow valve springs ARP head studs big custom grind wade cam nismo gtr n1 oil pump msd 1000cc injectors modified sump ross harmonic balancer I have nothing but praise for brian as he consulted me the whole way through and showed me the engine as it went through its transformation. At the time the engine was being built i turned my attention to the interior. A pair of race seats were purchased for the front with the rear seat and door trims trimmed to the match. The head-lining was replaced with new black velour and new dark grey super plush carpet was added. Red neons were fitted under the dash in front of sub and in the boot. All interior plastics were removed sanded primed and painted in platinum silver to contrast the dash which was painted white and the factory dash cluster replaced with autometer items. In all 15 autometer pro comp ultra lite gauges were used: 5" monster tacho 3 3/4" 160 mile speedo 2 5/8" water temp volts oil temp fuel level oil pressure fuel pressure nitrous pressure 2" air/fuel ratio trans temp pyrometer diff temp boost clock This may seem like overkill but i like it and it is my car. A B&M pro ratchet shifter was intergrated into the console as where switches for fuel thermos ignition neons coola spray and nos. A sport steering wheel with nos and line locker buttons was fitted along with a half roll cage and billet window winders. The stereo was also upgraded with the following: pioneer 8650 head unit pioneer front splits pioneer rear 6x9 in custom parcel shelf pioneer 10" competition sub fusion 2 channel amp fusion 4 channel amp stinger wiring and rca's At the same time the boot was resprayed in gloss black with a little silver partly boxed with the sub and two amps fitted, relocated battery, 2 fuel pumps (main edelbrock pump and carter lift pump) surge tank and 50litre fuel cell. 1/2" fuel lines are used through-out the car At the same time the engine bay was painted in the same gloss black with a little silver as well as some general tidying up of wires and hoses. Twin thermos were fitted an intercooler spray and adjustable edelbrock fuel regulator. One g'reddy catch can and one 5R racing catch can and lines were run and fitted The air-con and power steering were removed and holes cut for coola pipes to exit. The chassis was then bead slasted and coated in several layers of chassis black as were the wheel arches to return it to better than factory fresh standard. The front brakes were changed for vt slotted rotors and matching callipers, all new front struts and king super low spring were added as well as monroe rear shocks and king super low rear springs. New bushes were used throughout and an adjustable rear pan-hard bar and front sway bar fitted. A brand new hybrid intercooler was fitted to replace the old one with most of the front bar being removed to accomodate this. The diff is a standard vl turbo diff which was completely overhauled before being fitted with a mini-spool and 3.9 gears. The auto is a 2 speed power glide with raybestos clutches, needle bearings and a host of other goodies to enable to handle 800hp+ with transbrake and accelerator 3500rpm stall convertor which was built by colin at autoboss transmissions in moe. This is held in place by a custom cross-member supplied by crs. It was now time to go see allan and billy at rajab racing developments in campbellfield. Here the following was fitted: rajab plenum rajab exhaust manifold garret gt35/40 turbo custom fuel rail surge tank intercooler piping turbosmart 48mm pro-gate external waste-gate one-piece tailshaft B&M trans cooler turbosmart super-sonic bov Other mods include a calais front, bonnet pins, cowl mounted gauges, tinted windows all new lights rubbers etc. clear tail lights colour coded centre garnish and mirrors, deleted cruise control heater and air-con, blitz turbo timer turbosmart boost controller where cigarette lighter used to be and various stickers in engine bay side of car and windows. Again this is probably not to everyone's tastes but i like and at the end of the day i have to drive it. The vl will roll on 20" ssa chrome rims that are in my garage when finished but has worn nine sets of wheels in the last two years: 16" vs ss 17" roh blades 17" vy ss 18" amg matrix 17" momo status 18" momo sport 18" vt gts 18" chrome romi thunder 20" chrome ssa This is how the car sits now with future plans: install and tune motec by rajab racing run engine in and take for a few blasts at calder should run mid 10's then fit carrillo's, garrett to4z, possibly bigger cam and larger convertor to suit, plumb in 150hp shot of nos, tub the rear end sort out the suspension then run low low 9's I hope everybody likes it and if u see me and calder, heathcote or a show come up and say hi. big thanx to: brian and the boys at moe engines scott o for the awesome paint job scott for the great trim job alex for the stereo install colin at autoboss for the auto superplus in hallam for everything i needed g&j diffs in dandenong for the excellent work on the diff and most of all allan and billy rajab and rajab racing development for not being arrogant, listening to what i wanted and for excellent work and knowledge. I can not recommend these guys enough they are bloody brilliant!!!! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Dude can i ask why you've gone to the effort to replace your standard cluster, you've put a new speedo in ... but you've covered it with a boost gauge ... Why??

Autometer products are very accurate. Also, it may be mph that he wanted not km/h (for drag racing remember). And im sure both guages are visible when sitting in the seat, that photo is taken from a midgets pov, looking at the steering wheel center as eye level!

Because you went into this detail about "Autometer products are very accurate. Also, it may be mph that he wanted not km/h (for drag racing remember)." ... As if i didn't know that .... The question WAS "can i ask why you've gone to the effort to replace your standard cluster and you've put a new speedo in ... but you've covered it with a boost gauge ... Why??" Maybe the owner can answer that one ...

hey, it's for outright grunt the to4z i'm looking at from garrett will flow enough for 1000hp+ the gt35/40 runs out of huff at about 700hp, they are a top turbo but might go a gt42. also this turbo is just to run the car in until i can tub it and plumb the nos inthen it will get real serious. P.S: morgo i bought your plenum and custom low moust manifold which i had on my old set-up made 228kw at the wheels on 15p.s.i. i sold it to a mate who made similiar power when i decided to get real serious.
