Hey fellas, i have the original transmission in my vl 5.0 ltr and i am wanting to change it over to a well bit of a better quality one. I am looking at getting a sports trans but i have no idea where to start looking and later on (or at the same time) have a shift kit stage 2 installed. I live in vic so somewhere around the melbourne area would be good to take it to if anyone knows where. well if anyone has any ideas in what i could put in it it is much appreciated

rebuild it with a stage 2 shiftkit, kevlar bands, bigger servo, transcooler and a 2200 stally, thats what im will be doin 2 my gearbox anyway n that should do the trick in my car as my engine wont have anything that great done 2 it.

turbomatic hydromatic 350's are about the strongest holden box... i think thats what youd have in it for starters. Your choice in stall convertor will change from old motor to new motor. The higher the power, the higher this will pull the stall up. So if you get a stall that is 2200 with your stock motor, and your new motor has 400hp... it might pull the stall up from 2200, to 3000. Theres alot to consider. Is it for every day driving? Is it weekends only? Are you going for flat out fast as you can go or some sort of economy?

The VL 5.0 came out with the trusty old Trimatic. While they can be strengthened somewhat, a large capacity V8 with torque usually results in breakages. Any other GM transmission will require a Bellhousing change or modification.

You could always put a toughened VN-VP 4spd auto behind it but I think you will need to muck about with a speedo sender, electrics etc,but it would be nice have fourth on the open road.
