G-day people
I have the opportunity to pick up a gen 3 out of a reck from my mate up the road for next to nothing.
My main concern is the reliabiliy of the 5.7 running on gas. Will the head need attention or are they not to bad.Being a series 2 i think they ironed out alot of there problems but still not sure what goes wrong.
I know for a fact that it did still run sweet as before he crashed..
And also how strong is the 6 speed gearbox will it stand up to the torture of a 4wdriving.Bearing in mind that my gearbox has done 320000 and is still going well. And thats only a skyline/vl box.
This is not a definate, just seems like a good option considering i have access to a complete engine, wiring loom, gearbox, fuel pump, cooling system etc.Would just need an adapter plate for the transfer case and the usual pain in the bum, things here and there.
Any info/help would be appreciated

This guy was (last time i sent him an email) almost geared up to be selling gas-installtion kits to suit gen III's (see link with a clubsport showing power gains running his gas system).
http://www.gas-injection.com/news-lp...ies.html#link1 (http://www.gas-injection.com/news-lpg-gas-injection-technologies.html#link1)
The kits comprised of specialised converter, gas injectors and custom chip mods and a few other things i think. It was from memory a straight gas kit, replacement of fuel tank, using fuel rails to carry gas to custom injectors ... really neat job, using OEM computer properly...
Email him for some pricing ... looks really promising! (esp with the amount of cheap gen III's that are going to be kicking around with petrol prices the way they are atm!)

I'v already got a gas set up on my 3.0l at the moment.Just curious on how much work it would be to modify my set up and get it to suit the gen 3 and how well they run on it.I wouldnt mind having a gut full of grunt and be cheap to run.My patrol wouldnt know what hit it..

you'll have problems..
gen's run alloy heads, gas is too cold, you'll crack the head...
its the same reason you don't see many vl's on gas, and when you do, they're in the shop getting heads replaced all the time..
holden doesn't offer warranty on gas conversations for that reason..
stay well clear.

one of many probs ... you can imagine what a decent backfire would do to a plastic inlet manifold!.
check out the kit from gas-injection, as it gets around most of these probs using aftermarket injectors and engine management.
