Hey i just took my vlct for a spin for the first time in about a month...put some fuel in her and now when it comes on boost in say 2nd or 3rd or whateva (she's a 5 speed), the tacho jumps around erratically and the car has less power than normal, although you can still feel the boost, it is also backfiring a fair bit when you jump off the gas....massive cracks of thunder haha. I think it might be electronic as the tacho is involved? I checked all the leads, afm is fine, new fuel pump etc Ok im not a mechanic but i was thinking Battery/alternator? Thanks advice guys! Jack

mines doing the exact same thing, tacho jumping around, backfiring, loss of power, but every now and then it will die. mines the dizzy. when it does it again pull over turn the car off, grab a srew driver or something and tap the dizzy where the electrical plug plugs in. see how that goes. but remember that is only a temp fix

Maybe crank angle sensor or cas connector.

With backfiring out the exhaust you have a electrical problem, id be pretty sure of that. Seeming that your tacho is involved id check the distributor.

I've got the exact same problem and would love to find the cause of it.

ok i have had this problem a couple of times, first time was the cooler piping, fixed it up and ran like a dream again. second time was the dizzy, the shaft came loose and wasn't spinning the rotor properly, i tighteened it up and set the timming and replaced the cap and rotor and runs even better again.

jack i think its coz u havent got DOSE!! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

yeah definatly the crank angle sensor, the false signals makes the ecu think it's at different revs all the time and so vairys the timing constantly making the tacho jump and make it ping when too advanced and loose power when too retarded. You can pull the dizzy to bits and blow in out might work, and replace the bearing where the seal has gone hard and turned to dust.

sounds electrical jack, check CAS, dizzy, rotor button, etc. start with the small things first. could be something as small as a loose connection. Although the first part of the description did sound like a slipping clutch and/or loose cooler pipes Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

i can almost put money on it that its the COIL! take the lead off and look into the barrel of the coil if its got heaps of **** in there clean it out or buy a new coil with shiny insides if its not that its leads... its not cas or afm its ur coil (p.s i know coz my vl is the king of breaking down ) Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Definitely electrical, I had the same prob with the tacho going nuts, pinging, everything you describe. I buggered around with the connections to the coil, AFM and dizzy and also cleaned out the CAS on my car and something fixed it but I'm not sure what.

No not always the crank angle sensor. I had the same problem for a while, try just cleaning the rotor button and distributor cap, mine would run well for about a month and then start doing it again until I cleaned it. I also tried new coil and rotor button but neither helped. If there is white build up under the dizzy cap then scrape that crap off and take it for a run.

Bump. Did you end up fixing this problem AtmoBT1? I've been trying to fix it for ages. Changed CAS tonight and still no better. Its just really doughy on boost, you can feel a small miss and the tacho will bounce around once it gets to 3k. About the only thing I haven't changed is the loom and intank fuel pump.
