A mate of mine has a VN Calais 5L with a stock exhaust (small pipe) but its fitted with extractors out of the factory.. Hes after a bit of sound as he has to push it if he wants to hear that nice note of the 8's.. How much would it cost him for a CAT back system? and how big should he go? and what type? (Mandrel maybe ) Look forward to some help.
Cheers

Unless he gets some decent extractors i'd stick to a single system, either 2.5" or 3". Wouldn't be much difference performance wise between the two, biggest difference sound wise would be the choice of mufflers so get a decent one. I had a single 3" with only a magnaflow resonator and used to sound very nice. Having the resonator close to the end pipe also helps a great deal, the longer the gases have to travel to exit the pipe from the muffler the more "droney" it sounds (basically position the resonator as far back as possible). If that makes any sense.

i had a twin 2.5" to a single 3" and it sounded really nice with the cats was $800 on my vn but my vx ss has got twin 2.5" the whole way. on the 5L i would go the twin into single.

Yeah mines twin to single 3" - got defected for noise recently so whacked in a resonator...
Sounds really nice now.

Ditch the factory headers. When you pull them off and look up them you'll see why. Too restrictive....
My VN SS has 1 5/8" primary pacemakers into a single cat into single 2 1/2" with one very free flowing muffler. I've got a cam, port work and custom tune and I don't think it's restrictive so that's prob his best bet.
Can't be too loud cause I've never been pulled over for it but my missus can here me coming from round the corner. So it's loud enough
