VS series 2 utes are still up around the 18-20 mark.. for some reason they just kept their value...
I'd still buy a VU SS over a VS, and for maybe 4-5k more, excellent value for money..
The VS utes would be as good as any other 165kw 5ltr.. alright fuel consumption, better with a manual, and if you dont boot it to often I've found they aren't a whole lot worse than a V6..

The VS SIII utes have the 179 or 185 (can't remember which) sequentially injected V8 that was in the VT Series 1 (they were both made at the same time), so is a slightly quicker animal.
My old man used to own one, and compared to a current model SS ute it was a bit spartan (the current SS ute gets all the good bits pretty much that the SS car gets, where as the VS was just a ute with mag wheels and a sports bar, and some stickers...
I'd go the VU.
