hey guys im confused as to whats wrong with my gearbox bought a car that wasnt running and had a 5 speed in it. replaced it with my spare engine and put a brand new cluth kit on including pressure plate, clutch plate, throwout bearing and spigot. put her all back together with brand new oil but when shes runnin she has a slight tapping sound. when you put the clutch in, it slowly goes away. she does it in every gear until you get to 5th which is just tapping something chronic. its basically a very loud version of what isnormally happens. you cant say its the throwout or spigot cos i just replaced them and ive done hundreds so i know its done right. now what i think it is, is the syncro bearing for 5th gear. doesnt 5th gear aways turn no matter what gear you put it in. please correct me if im wrong.

hey man ihave the same noise but have been told its the input shaft bearing because mine is bent so it needs an offset bearing but the other day got told it could be a big end bearing plus now your theory so now i dont have a ****ing clue. if you find out wat yours was let us know pls. ps. does your sound continue even whilst in neutral.

it wont be the big end in my case as the engine was perfectl fine beforehand. im also thinking it might be the teeth as when i changed the oil it wasnt too good as a few nice chunks had been taken out. yeah the sound does continue unless the clutch is in then it stops like as if its slowing down gradually

I have a RB20DET 5spd (basically the same strength as a MF5) and soon as I hit boost you can hear the bearings screaming their tits off, im seriously contemplating now thowing out the 5spd for a strong auto and stally

I had very similar/the same sort of noise comming from my mf5 gearbox -> eventually I could not select 5th and had a rebuild. Turned out to be the two gearbox main bearings. One was realy noisy and the other had disintegrated. The mechanic said that the clutch was fine. (I also had the 1st-to-2nd sincro replaced, I'm guessing you could imagine why... ) I'm guessing thats what your problem is. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

The parts were only around $300-$400 (not totally sure, can't remember) so if you know a mechanic who is a mate or think you are good enough to have a go yourself, its not too much to fix. Paying a mechanic to do it is when it becomes expensive. You are better off looking for a replacement one with no noise, or look for a turbo one if you are thinking of going turbo later on. I whish I had of got a turbo box. Would have saved me a bit now, however my gearbox rebuild was a few years ago now. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
