Pretty sure the first number is when the engine is cold to how thick and when it heats up it becomes 40 or 50w. I could be wrong but on my vlct I think that its 10 - 40 or something fully synthetic so when its cold it gets lube and when its heats up the oil thickens.

i use GTX2 20w/50 in my VL as well... if its good enough for n/a mercedes benz's (specialised merc mechanic here uses it in all the mercs he works on), its good enough for my vl Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

GTX2 isn't a great oil, it's kinda at the cheap end of the market.

I thought i'd give Magantec a try. Doesn't seem too bad. Anyone else use Magnatec?

pennzoil multi-vis is fine. Remember, as your car gets older, it loses compression. Sometimes you need a thicker oil to up it and slow up the oil burning.

I use Magnatec. Ive been using it for ages. I have used alot of oil brands and found Magnatec to quieten the VL motor. I do a service (Filter and oil) every 5000km. In a car manual from the local car shop it recommends Magnatec for the VL too Ive used Castrol, Penzoil and Penrite and found the Magnatec to do its job quite well. Id never use synthetic unless it was a fresh rebuild and even then I wouldnt use the Mobil1 as its 5w/50. Its like water when its cold. Good oil but I wouldnt use it in an older type motor And to the person using straight 50 weight oil, Id hate to see what its doing to the motor when cold!! Maybe if you were in a warm climate you could try the Penrite HPR 30 - (40w/70) That oil I used to run in my 350 with good results when I was in Darwin
