Someone asked recently on here how to make your VL tailights darker. Heres what I did to my standard SL tailights to get that darker look. 1.Take the tailights out of the car 2. Give the ridges that run across the light a thorough sand with 320 grade sandpaper. 3. Give them a wipe with prepsol/turps/white spirit to get rid of all the crap on them and all the dust from the sanding. 4. Get some masking tape and a razor blade and start masking off all the grooves in between the ridges on the lights by putting the masking tape across the light and then trimming along the edges of each ridge with the razor blade. I used a tap washer to roll the tape into the grooves. 5. Once all the gaps are masked off give them another wipe with what you used in step 3 to remove any glue left behind by the masking tape. 6. Get some black gloss paint and start spraying. Give them about 4-5 coats of paint to make sure absolutely no light will shine through the paint. If you like you can use plastic primer, I didnt bother and the paint is still on there today BUT if I did it again I would definitely use it. 7. Give them a couple of coats with clearcoat and leave them to dry overnight. 8. Reinstall the tailights in the car and admire your new look! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Just tape up the entire light and run a razor blade along the edges of the ridges then push the tape into the groove. I used a tap washer that was the correct width to roll it in.

Oi, can't you just stick the VK lights on? they're all dark tinted stock aren't they? and they fit on the VL (correct me if I'm wrong).

Or you could just use a hard sponge to apply the paint like i did and you dont need to worry about masking up at all!!!!!!

Naah dale, I have VK berlina tailights or so called walky lights (same part no. from holden) and id prefer them due to the rarity of calais centre garnishes.. Also.. i think VLHERO has either VL or VK berlina tailligts.. no otehr type of moel commodore came with all black except for the walkinshaw and the VK Berlinas..

ok so the berlina i looked at today didnt have tinted tailights, does this mean its not a berlina or they dont have tinted lights??

hey duffman, was it a true berlina, or an exec converted to a berlina ??

VL Berlina tailights are tinted or pinstriped black along the ridges but the outskirts of the actual taillight is grey.. not black like the VK berlina t/lights... and yeh they are interchangable from a VL to VK

i dunno cos it had a SL EXECUTIVE badge on the glovey and it had CALAIS interior bits and he advertised it as a BERLINA???? i'm confused, anyway do i need to mask up the lights or can i just take out the light, sand em a bit, prime em with clear primer, spray with something to tint them (???????) and give them a few clear coats, tell me why this won't work?
