Thinking of getting a stroker kit for my 304 VL. At the moment the motor is seized because the it had a #1 bearing failure, and the piston came up and hit the head, flared out a bit, and got stuck in the bore, so i will require at least 1 new piston, and would prefer a new conrod, and crank because i recken they will have a few marks on them.
what sort of prices do these 2 stroker kits sell for? and what differences are there between them (like does the 355 only require a crank, and pistons, and use standard rods where as the 383 uses all different crank/rods/pistons??) i see that the 355 seems to be more popular, haven't seen many 383's getting around. What sort of power would i be looking at?

eh ? COME do have stroker kits, and are way better then pro-stroke kits, would have to say COME offer the best kits. But nothing beats sourcing your own individual components, just requires a bit of effort.

And to answer the original post..Yes with a 355 you can retain your original rods if you wish, only need crank, pistons, bearings, etc. A 383 requires different rods on top of that. Don't forget that both kits will require you to clearance the block for the crank/rods, and the 383 will require extra machining and can weaken the block, specially older 308 blocks that don't have as much webbing as the 304s. You can have the bottom of you water jackets filled up to add strength if your clearancing that much.
The COME racing website has a complete price listing for all their kits available.

The 355s seem to be a bit more reliable, hence why you don't seem to see as many 383s around. But a 383 would produce awesome torque if you're prepared to go that far. Power levels will obviously depend on how far you go with the rest of the build, both combos will offer great potential.

pro-stroke and COME both offer 355 & 383 kits for holden V8s. Pro-stroke are cheaper, but you get what you pay for

First of all. How much is he willing to spend?

28-05-05, 22:02 GMT+10#13 yeh don't get me wrong, pro-stroke kits are fine for a street car, i considered one when i first got my car. But personally if i was spending the dosh for a full rebuild i'd rather take the time to do things properly. Guess it depends on what you want and can afford.

28-05-05, 22:54 GMT+10#14 Yeah after talkin to Kane tonight some of those stroker engines can get a bit pricey... like $14k+... but you do pay for quality..

28-05-05, 23:30 GMT+10#15 no budget has been set yet, but the car will be like a 2 year long sort of project. So the budget is very flexiable The car will be a street car, but not a everyday driving car.
All the car needs to be in rwc and back on the road again is a working motor, but i've decided to do a bit of work to the motor, get the rest of the aero kit, and maybe a new paint job (only cuz i want a colour other then white)
only paid $500 for it with the seized V8 in it.

Your book should have a Stroker section in it. I have 3 different holden v8 rebuild books, and they all have stroker sections.
Come make good kits, so do Pro-Stroke. Pro-Stroke have plenty of strength options ie stage 1,2,3,4 and do custom stroker kits. I went with a 355, with Scat I Beams and Speed-Pro Pistons.

29-05-05, 09:50 GMT+10#18 I would shop around & buy it at the best $ & quality from different manufacturers
ie; crank:Harrop/Crankshaft rebuiders. Rods: either use your a9l's prepped properly or scat H-beams if useing holden journals Pistons: Depending on the application & rods u use but for holden journals there is Probe/Srp/Acl Or for chev there are heaps off the shelf pistons available at a reasonable $.
Probably best to work out what u intend the engine for either hot street, street/strip
etc etc.

29-05-05, 10:27 GMT+10#19 go the 383. less rpm for the same power and more torque. eg a similar 355 may need 7000rpm to make 500hp while the 383 may do it with same cam at 6200rpm. there is bugger all difference in price aswell. reliability in a 383 is a prob no longer. 5-10 yrs ago ppl didnt know how to mak em last but nowadays thats all been sorted with stronger of the shelf parts. everyone went 355 as u could use chev 350 gear but now theres not a thing u cant get for both 355 and 383. if it helps i can get u 5% off comes list prices aswell
