rightio...i got a delema. my mate took me for a drive in his recently completed vlct. i will give u some specs 1st. rebuild with forgies, blower cam and port work, gt35-40 1.06 rear wheel, big plenum, 600-300-100 cooler, ext gate, haltech and bosch 363s. made 430rwhp at 20psi and 480rwhp at 26psi. the point of my story is its the first quick turbo 6 ive been in and it blew me away the g's it pulls in 3rd gear. bit doey of the line but over 4000rpm and the thing is absolutely crazy. ive owned and driven a lot of low 11 sec v8s and this thing would have eaten my car up on the freeway....no chance off the lights tho. my delima is i wanna do up an lc/j torana with either a gen 3 v8 or rb30 turbo. in my opinion both are going to make about 600hp on the same sort of budget (10k). i want the car to run mid - low 9s in a mini tubbed and prepped streeter on pump but still be able to cruise with it. how hard is it 2 make a combo like above lauch and loose the lag. my thoughts are a trimatic and 4 grand conveter or would i be better of 4 drag racing going a v8 to get the low down torque. id prefer to do the 6 turbo route as ive already done 6-7 different stroker combos and im stilling doing my 383ci v7 blower setup on the vk but want to make sure it will be a streetable and damn quick little number. any hints and tips from u guys that own sub 11 sec vlt. whats the biggets pit fall to these setup once u start producing serious grunt
u said it yourself its doughy off the line, how true is it.. i went off into vlts myself coz of the small engine big turbo lag factor.. not my idea of fun
so it would of beat u on the run on a freeway or something, how often r u gonna race there
twincharge it
you have hit the same problem that i have with high powered turbo cars, the lag factor. twincharge will eliminate this. i have combined it with an RB25 head to further increase engine efficiency. should be interesting when it's done. for those kind of power outputs (600hp) you couldn't use the same blower i am, you're looking at an eaton M112 + T88 turbo or something like that. very good on an RB25/30.
edit: think of how quickly that car got from 8psi to 20psi. once it STARTS boosting, it creates a nice positive feedback system (more boost = more exhaust gasses = more boost etc) and spool time increases exponentially. getting to 1psi from vacuum is what takes time. imagine 8psi being fed by a roots blower by the time your foot hits the floor at any RPM. how quickly is your turbo going to spool then?

I know what you mean about 3rd gear, my mate has a monaro with a 400 Chev producing about 500HP and I took for a drive in my VL with 176RWKW and he was amazed and reckoned I might even start to catch towards the end of a strip! And I agree with the twin turbo setup.
Easiest way around the prob is with nos, configure the ecu to activate nos only when spooling for street driving, will last then. The stall will take care of it on the strip. Or u could stuff around like me and go sequential twins! (when i get around to it...)
i have no idea on the limits of the super v6 but a mate i've mine has one in his (turbo coversion)vt and it does 11s running about 20psi. he drives it aaround all day on lower boost , about 15-17psi, so streetable and such a sleeper with crazy power. think about that setup in a car that weighs half as much. a vt is a fuc king panzer!
a v6 it enough to get the thing off the line then when boost comes on its like a missile.
is it possibly have two turbos will get more power / reduce lag somewhat?? like that rajab car that has 2 is producing some massive power... and i remember reading about how on the turbo porsches i think, that 1 turbo is smaller than the other and gives the car all the low down power and then later the bigger one works through the top end giving it a pretty constant power band... would this kind of set up work on a vlt ??
twin turbos sequentially set up are very hard to correctly size but have the capability to work very very well. just look at the toyota supra for example. lots of R & D obviously went into a factory sequential setup and they got it pretty much right. doing a 1-off custom sequential setup can be very difficult WRT piping and gating them off from each other. twincharge is a lot more simple and *possibly* more efficient. it is definately safer for the engine if total boost pressure is 5psi greater than exhaust back pressure.
good cylinder scavenging = cleaner colder charge = more power further from the detonation threshold = more ignition advance possible
the hardest thing branko as you have no doubt found when driving cars with that much power is getting it all to the ground cleanly. it is VERY hard to drive a laggy turbo engine consistently fast if it keeps breaking traction when your foot goes all the way down. what you want out of an engine is to be able to go up through the gears as clean and fast as possible while just keeping it on the edge of traction the whole way. VERY difficult to do in a car with lots of lag and a massive top-end power band.
what you want, essentially, is an engine that produces the same torque (tractive effort, NOT power in terms of kw or hp) at pretty much every RPM above say 2500. there are ways to do this, some more simple than others, but the end result is a very "usable" engine.

like Petros said, smaller exhaust housing man.
Or do a single turbo conversion on the gen 3, might blow your budget a little though, but im sure you could get things a little cheaper than the rest of us.
Have you measured a gen3? reason being my
best mate has a lj coupe. We had a GEN3 and six speed for it. They seem way to wide(and we have done engine conversions before geminis with v6's in them, and 2 with vl turbos in them, one with a vr commordore tunnel grafted in). We ended up selling it and getting a injected 5.0/adapter to trimatic block, and it is easy to fit. I would love to see it but my tape measure thinks it won't work, the heads were basically touching the rails. Looks like a nightmare to me?.
Not all cars are like your mates, get rid of the stupid 1.06 and get a .82
housing and it will lose bugger all power and increase spool dramatically
those 1.06's feel awful in comparison
cheers
darren
twin cam head won't cost much more and will use the 1.06 easily with probably less lag. much more useable engine too.....
NOS is the cheapest and easiest way out of it, i agree.
You guys are so lucky ive never been in/or driven a VLT before.
I guess they would have tonns more ballls then a N/A RB30 and my N/A goes fairly hard so I could just imagine would a VLT would be like.
Sorry if that nothing to do with this thread what so ever.

i have a 1.06 ex. housing gt35/40 & got to say its not laggy at all, lag can most certianly be overcome the biggest factor will be the cam, inlet manifold & ex. manifold! & last but not least..... convertor choice
