hi, i've driven two vl's now, one n/a and other turbo and both exhibit the same ***ty downshift from 3rd to 2nd.
the problem is that there seems to be to much 'deadband' between the release of 3rd clutch and engage of 2nd clutch, allowing the motor to gain a bit of rpm during the shift, which makes the car lurch a bit when 2nd does pick up.
not a prob for WOT driving but annoying for moderate traffic cruising
is this a common prob with vl auto's - design prob?
if so, is there a fix?
ive also noticed that the shift from 3rd to 4th in the turbo under heavy foot also seems a bit odd.
feels like 4th is coming on b4 3rd has released!! - car feels like it's decelerating for half a sec or so - rpm is consistent - no slippage
any comments appreciated.
the trans in the turbo has somewhat higher than normal upshift speeds and doesn't need much throttle to force a downshift.
also brings the clutches on quite quick and hard with only moderate throttle
almost a bit too hard actually - bit thumpy, but that might be just a suspect modulator or regulator which would also be affecting the shift pattern.
ive not pulled a vl auto apart b4 but have pulled many others
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
VL Autos havent got direct power like a 5 speed would...Auto would be easy to get fast response thats why drag cars are auto not manual one stuff up in gear change is a big difference...
Sorry guys, got this a bit wrong, finally got some clear road and it's od - 2nd shift, not 3rd - 2nd. definitely need to sort modulator 1st then check again.
I had tie up issues with my trimatic like that... sometimes shifting up from 2-3rd.. and down shifting...
Give this bloke a call he helped me out big time, and I have no doubt will help you fix your problem..

thanks for the info, im actually gonna shut up for the moment on this till i get my facts straight and chek/replace vac line/modulator bits. there is significant 3rd - 2nd deadband...
