ok, so i put a detriot locker in my car, and i can't get it to stop tramping. it even tramps in the wet, exactly like it does in the dry... i have gone though 3 sets of shocks, koni's, pedders, gabriel's, and two sets of springs. i have new upper and lower trailing arm bushes and swaybar bushes. none of the welds appear to be cracked on the diff or on the chasis mounts. it drifts fine, only tramps in a straight line, and it got WORSE when i replaced the bushes... does anyone have ANY ideas on HOW TO FIX IT?!?!?! i am starting to get VERY angry...

Yeh grant.... it must be to do with the locker man... u've tried EVERYTHING else... maybe u need to get some adjustable upper arms and play around with the pinion angle mate... that would be my only other suggestion.. and it cant hurt to try.. i dont think adj arms are too expensive. goodluck with it bro.. must be ***in u off hard..

my theories include: a) locker wind up left to right similar to what old 4x4s with no centre diff exhibit front to rear b) gearbox mounts c) try a two piece tailshaft

short of the person you got it off, has anyone else used a detroit locker in a VL

i spoke to a few shops, both here and in melbourne, they have never seen a detriot in a vl... i should try the two piece shaft i think, although i think that it was alright for a few days after i got it in. thinking maybe something is bent/broken? but with new arms i don't really see what it can be. it isn't internal in the diff, as it sitll locks up fine and stays that way. i don't see it being windup, as it does it in the wet... you'd think if it was winding up the distinct lack of traction in the wet would even it out really quick. i am putting new springs and new koni's in it on a trial basis from a shop, hopefully that will fix it. if it doens't, I'm ****ed short of changing the angle as ollie said. i am not putting a LSD back in, they are ****. i ****ed a new one out in about 2months and it was so unpredictable...

haha was unpredictable alright.. HAHA:P grant i dunno about the distinct lack of traction in the wet cancelling out the wind up... i think regardless of whether the tyres can break traction easier.. its more mechanical.. (ie the angle) even more so now that i've just learned u use a 1 piece tailshaft.

still think your lsd was a dud.' ollie what do you mean you learned to use a 1 piece tailshaft? It is not like riding a bike

hahaha... i am wondering wheather this is all related to why i ****ed that LSD so quickly..

a single piece tailshaft in a VL is pretty prone to serious harmonics under heavy load/speed i beleive. have known of a few people who have gone back to two piece after having serious issues with a one-piece. they're just too long, they flex and wobble and generally **** around with your rear end, much like bubba does in jail

thats wat i meant stocky.. by learning/hearing that grant uses a 1 piece... its no wonder somethin is up.. :P

mmm... yeah, tried two sets of tyres as well... might try to tee up a two-piece soon. if it was tailshaft though i would have thought it would have done it at speed as well, not just when spinning?

tried a two-piece tailshaft today, didn't make any difference. changed the rear tyres for some **** 205's, and they fried for 40m! hardly and noticable tramp at all. so i then put my new toyo tyres on the rear (which were on the front) to the rear, and have sweet bugger all tramp. the little bit i have will be from my **** suspension. so yay! looks like it is pretty much fixed! Cheers for the help Lucas....

waht do u mena 'tramp'????? if u mean it bounces and carries one when u spin the wheels just get up it more or whip it around into a nut, that gets rid of any bouncing real quick

So what your saying is when you put your "balanced" front wheels on the rear it fixed it, same problem i have with my ute, i always have to get my rears balanced well when i get tyres ors its shakey around slight corners

tramp, as in the rear of the car bounces, and no, i cna't just do a doungh nut. and it never carries one anyway, it has a locker. this was ONLY is a striaght line, never did it drifting or doughies. na, the rears where balanced previously about 1 1/2 months ago. i think maybe thery were outta round?

It is all suspension/traction related. windup then letting go. A LSD will remove the problem, and one wheel will spin at a different rate to compensate. Well a worn-in LSD. a very tight LSD might do the same thing because it will act like a minispool. Yes by putting low traction tyres on the rear will stop the tramp, because it will wheel spin instead of winding up then letting go. Hope that made scence???
