Hi, Can someone tell me the difference between the genuine blue coded and black coded injectors for the VL RB30 turbo motor - is it flow rate? if so, does anyone have the numbers [cc's]?
Puzzled as to why GM list two for the turbo motor with no distinction between them.
Cheers
Hi Natho, thanks for the reply.
They all have brown top body, it's the colour of the metal ring at the end of the hose where it's clamped to the injector that is the important colour, either blue or black.
260cc is interesting, that may be the blue ones, as I have read elsewhere that black is 300cc [unofficial]

edit: NA is beige'y pink, turbo is brown [my wrong]
Ya, it's odd all right?? I don't understand why two are listed in the GM parts book for VL turbo with no indication as to which one is what??
Overfuel shouldn't be a problem as the oxy sensor would give feedback about the air/fuel ratio??
maybe it's something to do with altitude. GM always had different jets listed for reg. carbies depending on altitude etc.
But....they always said what application a jet size was for - with these injectors - nothing??
Some more info has come to light. On rechecking with GM parts, the guy helping me said it was a flow rate difference.
He had another look on the computer parts list and noticed that only the blue was specified for the 2.5 litre, and either blue or black for the 3.0 litre turbo.
This strongly suggests [if flow rate is the difference] that blue is a lower flow rate than black. He also thought that the blue flowed around 260cc.
I've read elsewhere that black flows 300cc.
When I get a black, I will get an injector shop to do a comparison and post the results back here.
the standard VLT injectors are only around 260cc, i've even had some flow tested and thats what they came up as. not sure where these 300cc ones would be used. the n/a only has 220cc injectors and it wouldn't suprise me if the 2L in the the NZ ones are smaller again.
so where exactly is this coloured ring, i can't find it on my spare injectors!
Hi Natho,
Thanks for your input to this puzzle.
The coloured ring is the metal ferrule at the injector end of the hose as per the pic below.
Seems only genuines have this ferrule, all the non-genuines I have seen just have a metal band clamping the hose to the injector barb.
The colour of the blue one is a light blue, like the nozzle tip.
I have a set of 6 new black ones, and one of them has the number 306 scratched into the black paint of the coil body. Seems that one was flow tested at 306cc
I'm yet to confirm this flow rate.
So now then, if a turbo'ed rb30 motor came fitted with black injectors from Nissan, what else was different about the motor? Stronger boost/turbo for bt1's?
oh, that 'ring' is just a clamp used to hold the hose there instead of another hose clamp like the one used at the top. the reason a lot of them dont have them is because they've been cleaned and new hoses have gone on. you can still buy those rings however.
i'm after a set of new or original (NOT ULTRASONICALLY DESTROYED) injectors, where are you getting yorus from? i was quoted $990 today for a set of 6 from petro ject. screw that!
oh and one more thing, the oxygen sensor only gives feedback for cruise/light load conditions.
if there were 300cc injectors on a VLT, you'd need a matching ECU or your car would run mega rich.
i think if there were two different ecu/injector combo's (and most likely power too, there'd be no point otherwise) we'd probably know about it by now!!
Ya, thats right Nath, its primary function is to clamp the hose, tho when original, the colour [for turbo rb30] is either blue or black.
My vlt currently has blue ones in it.

Absolutely, but the question still remains, why are two different injectors quoted for vlt in the GM parts book?
If flow rate is the difference, well then......wtf
Might go to Nissan themselves to get the answer.
GM have superceeded both orig. part numbers to one p/n and want about $385 EACH!!
$990 does sound a bit 'rich'. I've been quoted around $80 - $90 for ACA's in Coventrys - Adelaide.
I picked up this set of 'blacks' out of the local rag for about $60 each complete with correct rail clamps.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
between injector testers there will be differences the one i use camo out with these results.......... non turbo injectors are 185cc turbo injectors are 270cc and 2litre nz model has 147cc injectors, now if you were to get the injectors from a 2litre turbo skyline and flow them they are the same as vlt just with a different pig tail and electrical connector. with small modifications the 20det injectors fit into a rb30et and run exactly the same. ive proved this as im using 20det injectors with no probs

are they injectors from the NICS or ECCS RB20DET?
i discovered they all flow 270cc (same as VLT injectors) however the NICS (red top RB20DET) ones are low impedance (like VLT) and ECCS (silver top RB20DET) are high impedance.
before i discovered the impedance thing i got a little excited coz rb20det injectors go for $80 a set all the time, way cheaper than VLT ones. if you are picky you could probably even adapt a fuel rail from a newer (R33) RB20E to fit so you dont have to put hoses over the part of the injector that normally just has an o-ring.
Hi guys,
I'm under the pump atm. will get back with more details soon, but just for now, another guy at a parts place here said the difference between blue and black was spray pattern, which may make a bit more sense. He seemed fairly informed and had owned vlt's.
Will get the blacks i have tested for flow and pattern, and when i have a chance, pull a blue from the motor and get that tested.
This threads almost too old to worry about anymore, but here's an update anyway.
According to the GM manual, there was a revision of the injector for turbo's, and that was the stroke of the pintle.
This may be the difference between the blue ringed injector and the black ringed injector.
In any event, the black ones I fitted flowed 280cc. They were all matched to 70ml flow which is a reading taken over 30 secs at 50% duty cycle with standard test fluid.
The engine is running beautifully with them. The immediate plus being instant and smooth idle at start, even on a freezing 0c morning!!
I had to crank the engine for a couple of secs on the old ones.

interesting, every injector i've had cleaned has started leaking internally within 6 months, wouldnt mind hearing how you go once summer hits (mine would flood and take lots of cranking to start).
also it seems the blue 'ringed' injectors are from the '88 models and black from the earlier ones.
