What car battery do you guys/chicks have in your cars? I have a Supercharge Gold MF with a 575 CCA Not sure if this is a good brand, or if there are any better ones...? I know a few people with these batteries that haven't had an issue with them, but while my car was running, my alternator went the other night and after replacing it, I charged up the battery only to find that it charges to only 13.7V (batt has a max rechraging volt of 14.8) and drops to 11.3V when the charger was taken off... which obvuiously won't start my car. Does it sound as though my battery is stuffed, my charger is rooted or that I need a higher amp charger to charge it? Any help appreciated Cheers Mick Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

When its fully charged. It should sit around 12.4V - 12.9V off the charger. If its only got 11V after fully charging I would say its cactus. Whats the charger output in Amps? I could work out if you charged it long enough as well. Whenever a Lead Acid Battery is discharged to very low levels (which would have happened when you drove with a dead alternator), the cells start to sulphate and unless you get it on a charger immediately your battery will loose capacity or collapse altogether. (Especially if it has some age on it or its a crap brand) A deep cycle type battery is good in these conditions as they are easier to recover from deep discharges.

Another thing i should have mentioned, with regards to your question. The battery would be at 13.7V because one of two reasons. 1. either it wasnt charged long enough 2. or you have an automatic charger and it was just floating the battery at that voltage after the boost charging. Without knowing the charger type/specs, can't say either way.

Quote: Whats the charger output in Amps? Make: Projecta Model: SC4000 4 AMP RMS Input: 240V @ 50Hz 0.2AMP Output: 12V DC2.2A CONT Was on charge for approx 30 hours Don't know if it makes any difference, but it's a maintainance free battery as I don't need to top it up. The brand is SUPERCHARGE www.supercharge.com.au (http://www.supercharge.com.au) Are deep cycle batteries with say a CCA of over 550 available? P.S. Another thing is before I turned the charger off it was floating around 13.7 and 14.1V... I checked it at one time it was 14.1, then came back a few hours later and it was 13.7 Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I run Gel Cells, much better, super CCA, mines like 1100CCA and the thing is smaller than a standard battery, but cost 5 times as much, lol

Yeah those projecta chargers have a float/maintenance mode, so thats why it would have dropped to 13.7-13.8V. When you measured the 14.1V it must have only just changed over from boost to float and still dropping voltage. How old is the battery? Sounds like its stuffed to me, highly unlikely that you will recover it. I relocated the battery in my brothers R31 the other day and used a Red Top Optima. Best batteries on the market in my opinion for auto applications anyway. The Yellow top Optima is the deep discharge type, used in 4x4 and car sound installs. You have to be fairly keen to use these batteries in your car though, they are more expensive than an ordinary battery. Primary reason i like them is because in boot installs they don't vent gas like the others. As for the others, Century, Supercharger etc etc they are all much the same, buy one that hasn't been on the shelf forever and you should get a good 3-5 years or so out of them, provided your charging system is all good.

Yeh I looked at OPTIMA's site and there is a distributor about 5mins from me I need a battery that has a slow discharge (cause sometimes car may sit there for a few days) and something I can also use for my audio What would you recommended? Mick Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

After several experiences with returning batteries, I have collated the following. OldGold's Tightass Tips for Cheap Batteries These work best at shops like Big W or K-Mart, where the staff aren't expected to know a lot about cars. Having said that, some have also worked at SuperCheap. Why am I not suprised? Find the cheapest, smallest no name battery. Use a razorblade to take the barcode off (be very careful) and stick it on the biggest, most badass one they have there. Act nonchalant and walk out $100+ ahead. If you're poor, you could remove the barcode, take it back to the store and say it's too big and you'd like to exchange it with a smaller one, but you've never used it. Then change it for the $30 one you took the barcode off originally. Money in the bank. Keep your receipt when you buy a battery. Most have a two year warranty. Selling your car? Pull off your kinglead and crank your car till it dies. Take the battery in and change it for the tiniest one. Having a crap battery won't really affect the value of your car. Money in the bank! You could also do this and exchange your battery every year or two, so you never have to buy a new one. Batteries have a finite life, and are expensive. I have personally only tried the third one, but I think the battery was actually rooted anyways. The others have been tried and tested by a friend of mine, and the second would also work as someone I know did this without a receipt, but legitimately. Stealing is bad!
