dont really know about mods but fuel wise the best ive done is 330Kms to a full tank of optimax. and stock they can struggle to beat a n/a six if its not tuned properly

I think the best mods to do first is exhause - decent headers and a 2.5 system. Get out carby tuned properly once you have done he exhaust and you should notice a decent power gain...
Further mods can then me done like, cam/heads/manifold ect..
An N/A would have no hope...

I reckon keep the carby but have it upgraded to HDT spec, use a chrome aircleaner from any speed shop, get a wade cam 242,extractors exhaust and run the thing on premium and the NAs wont see which way ya went.

Just a question in regards to the manifold guys. Do you replace the intake or exhaust?

intake, as exhaust would be done when extractors are fitted

mate, change the heads to VN type, therefore also needing a cam change, header change and intake manifold. Also, stick with the Rochester but have it tuned and jetted properly, they are a good carby and work well, as they have small primaries and huge secondaries. As for intake, an Edelbrock dual plane Performer would suit well.

VN heads and manifold cost megabux, the standard VL inlet manifold is pretty good but the heads are small valve and a bit restrictive but are good on fuel, maybe just get em a port job and have the inlet manifold port matched to the heads.

take it from me the most expensive part in doing a vn head conversion is the exhaust
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
