what would be the best auto for an injected 355 in a vl? i've been told that the t400 is stronger than the t700. what do u guys think???

t400 is the strongest but also zaps a bit more power, ive always understood a turbo 350 to be the best compromise, fairly cheap to rebuild and very strong and not as big as a 400. Depending tho if its daily and u got some cash to burn then do a t700, overdrive is very awesome u have to admit.

wat do u think needs to be done in regards to shift kit/stally?

t700 can handle a steet driven 355 quite well but when you start flogging it which is why your getting a 355 thats when the t700 starts to loose a bit of life and gearboxes like the t400 can handle it.

if you're willing to put the money in the 700 - go for it as the overdrive will allow you match up the diff gearing with the cam/manifold/compression while still retaining good cruising RPMs but if its not going to be daily driver the 350 is a good compromise

The TH400 (3L80) is the strongest 3 speed on the market. The TH700 (4L60) torque rating GM at 20% less than the TH400. GM transmission codes 1st number= number of forward gears, 2nd letter T for transaxle or L for Longitutinal, 3rd equals relative Torque Rating and if there is an E on the end- this means electronically controlled. All Gen III run a 4L60E and 10 sec 1/4 mile pass' are quite achieveable. We have full manuals for the E series and a working on a transbrake version. Check out the LS1 nationals this weekend at Heathcote (or see FullBoost Pics) to see some 4L60E's in action. A 4 speed on the street allows for low diff ratios that aid in acceleration while still getting cruise. Relatively low Hi Stalls (around 2400 rpm) can still run the Lock Up Plate inside the Torque Converter giving better cruise fuel economy and reduced heat generated. While pricey, if properly set up they work well and are reliable.

i use a TH400 in my VL with a 355 Walkinshaw EFI and it's bulletproof gearbox crossmember may be tricky to find have it rebuilt by a pro shop like yarra valley in melb and use a big cooler b&m pro-ratchet shifter is a must for positive shifts

The VN-VP Commodores with the TH700 ran a lock Up Torque Converter controlled by the Power Train Control Unit.

Re route the transmission oil feed so it only energises the circuit in 4th gear and use a Vacuum Hob switch to turn the Lock Up Torque Converter off and on.
