Hey guys askin these questions on behalf of a mate, its not at all vl related but there seems to be a lot of knowledgable people on this site so we thought we would give it a go. he has a 2003 turbo diesel land cruiser ute, and is looking for more power. we are in townsville in qld and have a local turbo guru here by the name of john patrick, i think he is fairly well known?
anyway, just postin here to see if some of you guys reckon this would be worth while or not, what is involved in the process and what sort of gains/power delivery can we expect. the standard motor is a little laggy, will the high flowing improve response or not really? also while this stuff is off the motor we were thinking about porting and polishing the exhaust manifold, just cleanin it up or whatever, is this common practise?
these mods will be complemented by a 3 inch exhaust and a small top mount intercooler, along with the necessary tuning.
thanks guys, hope some one can answer our questions.
with a diesel you want to stuff in as much air as possible.. diesels run by detonation, so hiflowing your turbo should do the trick. the only thing you have to worry about with a diesel is your EGT, you need to have a largish exhaust to get rid of the gas as quick as possible to prevent burnt exhaust valves, which is what kills diesels. so yeah, porting the exhaust mani should do you good too.
should go alright though, will make a nice bagload of torque.

Hey dude, here is what I have done to my Diesel. For the time and effort its not worth it for the small performance gain. I wouldnt do it again. I am now going to pull the Diesel out and put a VG30DETT in.
My 4WD is at the bottom of this link. http://www.turbocreations.com/fj20/tims12/

hey guys thanks for the replies.
jeles c thanks for the link man, i think my mate will prolly go ahead and do it anyway, the new direct injected toyota motor should respond to mods alot better than the old nissan 2.7, no offense or anything man.
anyway my mate has more money than sense, and his brother is a diesel fitter, so they will be doing all the work as far as removing and installationand stuff goes, so it wont workout too bad money wise.
will let yooz know how it goes (if and when it happens!)
the thing with diesel engines is boost doesnt have a great deal to do with power, its all to do with diesel pump pressure, but at the same time the more fuel you wind into the pump the hotter the exhaust gasses get and as krieger burn valves is very common
A bloke down here has a Nissan Patrol 4x4, He took his to JPC and they put on a bigger turbo, cooler and dyno tuned it and its making 118rwkw out of a diesel engine considering it was only capable of like 70rwkw stock or so he said
yes big exhuast for diesels.
yes big turbos for diesels.
no not much boost for diesels
no power is not easily achieved with diesels
diesels are for farm equipment lol.
youd be mad to buy a car with a diesel
NO hes got a thing there making that cruiser ute go like the clappers, Theres a Feller round here who deals in a few cars and he had like a 2003 direct injection turbo cruiser ute, and he could hit the bottom of this massive 4 lane hill doing 90, put his foot down out and pass and by the top his was doing 110, but this is with a V8 Vr senetor and a MAssive twin axle car talier. The power they create is awsome. Alos john patrick is spose to be REALLY good from what ive herd, i wouldnt think twice about taking my turbo there.
yeah thanks to the guys who have showed an interest and replied!
markoshyp its not my car but anyway diesels ARE NOT just for farm equipment. these trucks have heaps of grunt and are awesome to drive.
anyhow, have spoken to both john patrick AND mike vine about the turbo, and both advised that it is already as big and high flowing as you would want it. got onto a guy who makes large front mount intercooler kits for this ute and looks like one of those will be going on, along with a safari D-tronic computer, and a 3 inch exhaust.
later on if my mate is still not satisfied i will try to source an adjustable computer for it and then we can play with the boost, and then if still not satisfied we will pull the head manifold and turbo off and do some grinding!
yeah i have seen plenty of powerful diesels.
hey bro nah sorry man werent bagging them out to the max or nothing just was saying uno if your gonna spend money on performance or to get it going better its sorta no use hiflowing or even a bigger turbo coz they dont make that much difference just put in an unleaded motor and it will hammer.
Take it easy dude.
