One of my mates was thinking about putting one in his VC he opted against it due to modifications and time and money needed....
He decided on a late model injected 304 instead.

ive only ever seen it done in a vp wagon.. it could definately be done and is different... the motors arent expensive either but i would think the conversion would cost a bit and be a lot of stuffing around, all for a motor that only makes about 190kw and is hard to modify..

I put a 1UZ into my VL Calais, easy and cheap swap too. Took 3 weeks from start to finish and cost just over $2k (after selling my old engine and trans). The $2k includes buying an aftermarket ECU which was the biggest expense of the conversion.
Makes more power than the old EFI 5L did and uses the same amount of fuel around town as my NA 6cyl VL did.

got any pix, was it hard to get engineered?

VL400, you put aftermarket comp instead of factory as you had no idea how to hook it up yeah??
I think my boss is one of the only guys in australia that knows how to hook up the factory computer, But I could be wrong??
The factory comp is ace. There is a guy in WA that has a 4.0 in his celica drag car with 2 rollerbearing's. It runs 8.20's week in week out no prob's and runs the factory computer with a piggy back.
A guy from NSW rang my boss today regarding building a tt 4.0 for his cobra and he wants about 860hp so my boss rang his mate in WA. This guy does eddie tasone's vh.

serious? Man, show us some pictures! were there any complications during the swap? Thats pretty damn cheap man, but you already had a V8, i wanna go from N/A RB30, to a 1UZFE.... how much harder do you think that would be?

Factory computer is really easy to wire up. Takes about 5 wires to get it up and running with no fault codes. Problem with the factory ECU is it cannot be tuned (no one has cracked the ECU completely, as far as i know only one person has figured out most of one of the 10+ variations) plus it has limited learning for bigger injectors (high impedance only) so cant really mod the engine too much.

It runs a MOTEC M48, runs methanol so dont think a piggy back will work too well

Isnt Tassone's car is tuned by Mr Rodriquez?? From over your way??

11-04-05, 22:54 GMT+10#10 Was a pretty straight forward conversion, biggest problem is the exhaust manifolds. The crown engines are the most common to buy and the exhaust manifolds will fit but have the wrong sump position if u buy an LS400/Majesta motor it has a front sump and will fit but the exhaust manifolds wont. It is a tight fit (to change #8 spark plug the brake master cylinder needs to be unbolted and the rear brake line removed) but otherwise excellent. So smooth even at 6000rpm, cant even tell it is running when sitting at the lights (you can feel the vibrations from the speakers through car at idle with volume just audible)
Heaps has changed since this photo, was a few days after getting it running...

11-04-05, 23:32 GMT+10#13 Nah no need to remove the heads to change the plugs, lol, no way id have it if that was the case. The plugs and leads are under the black plastic covers (the four cam cover). Just cant get an extension bar onto #8 plug without moving the master cylinder and brake line. Only have to do it once a year with regular plugs or almost never with iridiums so not too bad.

Was told yesterday by the mob that built the package that it was running factory comp so just repeating what I was told.
Tassone's car was tuned by him but I'm talking about the guys that did the motor and stuff, not the tuning.
Think Rodriques(spelling) got an extra 400 hp at the wheels through tuning it.
My mate s rotor is built by maztech and pulls around 550-600 hp at wheels and thats why soon I'll be going to him for a tune.

12-04-05, 21:15 GMT+10#16 my mate has had a lexus 8 in his lj 2 door torana for yonks now did it all him self when he first put it in it was totally stock just running extractors and ems and it pulled 13.4 i think from memory on street tyres.
After that he bolted on a vortech supercharger big front mount mini tubbed it full fuel system and made about 240rwkw still got another 30-40rwkw in tuning yet to come but it ran 11.7 on street tyres
It runs standard bottom end the whole motor is standard and also the standard lexus auto the only thing is he has to lock the converter out manually cause it doesnt run the factory computer.
He hasnt touched this setup in the last 2 yeas but hopefully soon i think he wants to get will a stally for it and getting it tuned to get that extra Kw and some slicks should see him get in the 10's
I know he was so impressed he was going to put one in his vl and hasseled me to put one in my vl ehehehehehe the auto was that good my other mate put one behind his efi 5.0l in his vc and hasnt had any drama's

Yeah no worries, there was a full write up in Zoom a while ago, havnt got the mag but i think it answers most of the question ppl have. It is one very serious car with about the only stock thing being the engine internals (but i think that has changed now).
BIGADS: Thats some pretty damn good performance from the torrie! Do you know what they are using to control the auto?? Without a controller you must manually shift. Not much of a problem but shifting through the three positions the shifter can be in goes through gears 1-3-4 so no 2nd gear.

13-04-05, 11:39 GMT+10#20 in parts peddler mag some joint is selling one for $999, GC apparantly! they certainly are cheap so even if the conversion cost a little bit of cash it still all up wouldnt be expensive at all. Not bad for a smooth as silk V8.
You guys say the computer is the hardest part, wouldnt the sump and extractors be a lot harder? u going custom or does someone sell em off the shelf for the conversion?
I was nearly gonna do this a while ago but the more i thought about it the more i got turned off... no aftermarket support, difficult to modify.. they are strong from the factory but ive read lexus forums e.t.c of guys slapping a turbo or two on them and blowing them apart
