those people who have LPG setup on their cars, i want to know some information.
whats the reliability like?
anyone have problems with overheating?
you havnt starved the engine from fuel?
anything that can go wrong?
would it be smart to keep an unleaded tank so you can switch? i would like to run straight gas if i can, keep the weight down but i dont want to be stranded.
and this one sounds silly but just wanna make sure. has the gas ever frozen up, and you cant start the car? (i asked this b4 as a joke, but i heard it somewhere and just wanna make sure its a joke) (ps. this is melb weather i want to know)
im interested in doing the conversion, just want to know what to look out for and make sure its worth it.
cheers guys

starve the engine from fuel, gas has higher ron that premium fuel

dont go 1/2 and 1/2,.. cause when you tune it, you need to tiune it to be bias towards a particula fuel, either Petrol or Gas, and neither then runs as good as it would other wise,..
if you want Gas go 100% and get it tuned for it nice,
run good oil though her, and you will never look back

first of all there's only one way to go with gas, thats a gas only setup or dont bother at all, dual fuel is junk!
U will never starve from gas, it runs at something like 2x the pressure of even an efi engine. The entire gas system from the converter to the tank is far stronger and safer than any petrol setup.
You can dint a petrol tank with your fingers, a gas tank a hammer would break before you even put a dint in the tank itself!
No overheating problems, gas likes to run warm anyway.
Its VERY reliable, gas engines are so much cleaner than petrol engines its no comparison.. just look at the odo when u get in a taxi next.
I just took down my 308 that was on straight gas and the whole thing looks brand new, besides some carbon build up on the pistons but that no doubt was from mostly when it was on petrol.

thanks fella's, thats what i wanted to know...
im liking the idea of the $25 a tank for roughly the same K's, because when i move to melb ill be living in Dromana, and most likely working in the city (my vl will be my daily driver, cant afford to run 2 cars)
i pritty much wanna be like gas747, i love the idea of a powerful street car running cheap

whats the reliability like? - great, and you don't have to worry about fuel regs or pumps!
anyone have problems with overheating? - why would it effect your cooling system, sure the water/coolant runs thru the convertors but if everything is tight and in good nick then there shouldn't be any more strain on the overall coling system!
you havnt starved the engine from fuel? - not if you use a large line from the tank, I had a flexible 3/8 for my twin GRA setup (1000 CFM), it never starved for fuel, not even on the dyno!
anything that can go wrong? - mate it's a car, anything can go wrong. You do need to clean your convertors out occassionally as they do clag up with sh!t over the years
would it be smart to keep an unleaded tank so you can switch? i would like to run straight gas if i can, keep the weight down but i dont want to be stranded. - as mentioned, go straight gas, you can't tune a car to run on 2 fuels, it's good to have a Forklift LPG tank with a propper fitting for your tank in case you run out, you just need someone to bring it to you!!!!!
and this one sounds silly but just wanna make sure. has the gas ever frozen up, and you cant start the car? (i asked this b4 as a joke, but i heard it somewhere and just wanna make sure its a joke) (ps. this is melb weather i want to know) - LPG is very cold, that's why it needs to be heated via the convertors with your cooling system running thru them. The convertors will freeze up if your cooling system runs out of wanter/coolant, and your car will stop. It's very important to have your cooling system at it's best when running straight LPG.
Also, I would recommend the Gas Research throttle bodies and intake manifold.

It's not a silly question mate, a while ago my brother in law (with a VK 308 on straight gas) was driving up the Hume hway pulling a horse float and all of a sudden the car just dies and wont restart. they couldn't work it out, then found no water in the radiator, and the convertors frozen up. so they ended up waiting a bit, refilling with water, and she fires back up and away they went. It's not a major problem..........

that's exactly what I said!!!!! You have to have a good cooling system when using straight LPG!

28-03-05, 20:40 GMT+10#12 In the middle of winter last year when my car had been siting outside in the cold night air all night, i went to start it at about midnight and the converter got ice cold and frozen over due to how cold the water would have been. Poured water over it, waited a few minutes then had another go and started it no probs.

thanks for the info. with the throttle bodies i would want to do the whole conversion properly, so all this info is great. i might as well learn from other people.
