Gday i am well aware that the CAS is a major problem in our VL cars. I have just replaced another one . This one lasted only 2 years. my question is, is there another way of getting around this problem? apparently, the positioning of the CAS on the VL right next to the motor and in the dizzy is the reason it melts and brakes, due to excessive heat. Can you get around putting the CAS somewhere else on the car, or is i a situation that cannot be fixed and we just have to get over it ? cheers lozza

Get over it i'd say! I've had my VLT for 7 years. Haven't had 1 CAS related issue. Just lucky i suppose.

there is a way around it - get an RB25/30 combo engine going. the 25 CAS is supposed to be a lot better and more reliable than the RB30 one.

Just make shaw your ignition leads are run away from the loom going to the dizzy, apparently you can spike the electronics with the high voltage in the leads, i accidently did that and the dizzy lasted a week, since i relocted the leads, never had a problem since.

I've had the same CAS in my car since 96.. never had any dizzy related probs. I had a plug come undone and disconnected from the MSD, which I thought initially was a cas.. but thats it.

Make sure you change the bearing on the shaft at the same time and it will last allot longer.

I found this a while back about the CAS: http://www.fueltech.com.au/trade_vehicletips.html If you look at under the section marked : VL CRANK SENSOR STRIKES BACK You might find a fix, it seems there are more than one alternative to this more than common problem

the reason that the crank angle sensors die so fast is that the bearing in the distrubator shaft wears making a fine red dust accumulate on the 360 degrees disc and which you place in the CAS which the dust also accumulates on. It makes the CAS work hard and overheat causing it doing go dead!! i know this becuz my old man mates with the owner of ACA which make crank angle sensors and many other things! but it doesnt matter really wat ya do, its really how long that bearing it gonna last!!

Gday guys holden told me yesterday that replacing the bearing as well as the C.A.S. wont do anything with regard to prolonging the C.A.S, unless the distributor is making funny noises. if the dizzy is loud, then, replace the bearing, otherwise, it wont make any diference. Please feel free to comment with your thoughts lozza
