Hey. Just did a big search and couldnt find too much on changing the timing belt on an N/A... My car is almost at 300,000km's and I have no idea how old the timing belt is and i have worked out that it is the cause of the annoying ticking problem im currently having. Would I be best to get just the timing belt and change that or get the full kit with new tensioners etc.? What needs to be done exactly? I have a small idea but is there anything major that needs to be done? Anything I need to be careful of etc. What about the harmonic balancer how do I go about that? What do I need. Thanks Everyone! Change the belt mate,i got mine done today. No need for the full kit unless the tensioner pulley is not free spinning. 1 thing to do is chuck the spring away that goes with the tension pully as its not needed. Also remove all belts, fan and shroud. Umm you'll need a puller to get the main bottom pulley off un less your lucky enough to be able to lever it off with 2 levers, unfortunetly mine was a bitch to get off.lol Also youll need a big socket around 23mm i think but you better check. make sure the motor is #1cyl tdc Also when installing the belt make sure the centre dowl pin on the cam sprocket is dead centre at the top. then when you get the new belt it will have 2 white lines marked 1 marked either end, the cam cog has 1 centre punch type indentation on the front of the cog so line the white line on the belt with that indentation. Secondly on the crank cog it has 3 indentations so put the 2nd white mark on the belt inline with the 3rd indentation on the cog moving clockwise and also the 3rd indentation must also line up with the timing mark on the oil pump housing . Then its pretty much putting evrything back together. Hope that helps champ.

So to get to the timing belt cover I need to take off all belts, the fan and shroud... Is that all? The cover is held on by just screws? So once thats off I need to get a puller to get the harmonic balancer off? Then from there its just a matter of pulling it all out and reaplcing the belt. Then to put it on i need to line up the white lines on the belt to the indentations on the the cogs...

yep thats correct, the bottom half of the timing cover is held by 4 8mm bolts the same as the top, you cant get that bottom cover off until you have the pulleys off as the cover has to come out forward from the motor as it wont come out by pulling it up. So thats pretty much it.

Well started taking off my belts and took off the aircon belt to find that quite a few teeth were eaten away on the belt. So i turned the car on and found that it was infact that, that was making the noise, took it for a drive and its all fixed! So im happy. Didnt have to pull anything apart, and I have myself a spare timing belt. This is what the aircon belt looked like! Thanks for your help anyway Hooligan! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

lol thats farked , lucky its just that belt. My timing belt had about 30teeth stripped off all in a row and ended up on the crankshaft pulley, hence it wouldnt fire coz it wasnt turning the cam then dizzy. No worries champ

Disconnect battery Drain coolant remove bottom and upper hoses from radiator also auto trans cooler hoses Remove radiator Remove 10mm nuts holding fan to water pump. Remove belts starting with power steer, then air con and then water pump/alternator Remove upper timing belt cover Remove harmonic balancer pulley. need a puller which is $20 from repco Note- Compressor advisable to rattle harmonic balancer bolt off Remove bottom timing belt cover put harmonic balancer bolt in. Wind engine over till crank lines up with mark. Release tensioner Remove timing belt Inspect water pump, crank seal and cam seal for failure Replace tensioner (would not reconmend using old one) Fit new timing belt making sure arrows on belt face going clockwise. Count teeth of belt from cam to crank mark making sure there are 53 teeth. tension tensioner allowing play in the belt. Wind crank over twice so cam rotates a full cycle Recheck crank mark and count teeth on belt Recheck and tension tensioner if needed wind over another 2 times, If your paranoid like me count teeth on belt again.

bringing up an old thread, but with the main pulley, there was a 'spacer' thingy that came off when the tensioner spring came off (*** melb weather is too cold to work on cars, my fingers are so sore...). can anyone advice me on where exactly does it go? im guessing between the block and the main pulley to space the pulley away from the timing case.

Are you talking about the spacer plate that sits behind the lower timing cover?

yeah, its a round thing that has the same grove on the inside as the pulley has.

yes there is supposed to be one between the gear and the harmonic balancer. Goes on with the concave side pointing forward.

As above, concave points out, flat part sits against the gear.
