Should the turbo spool in neutral?

Hey guys, A hero in a Supra pulled up at the lights next to me the other day and decided to rev his engine while looking straight ahead and you could hear the turbo spool then a small flutter. Prior to this instance I had noticed when my car is in neutral (It's a 5 speed by the way) you can put the boot to the floor and the boost gauge will hit 0 and you'll hear the turbo the tiniest bit but it won't spool. Which is why I chose not to act like a fool and rev the guts out of my car for somebody obviously obsessed over neons and rice bodykits. The engine can rev its tits off but won't go past 0 on the boost gauge. And it does the exact same thing with the clutch all the way in, in first gear. Should it be spooling when you give it a boot or not? Anthony...

it's because it isn't under any load. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yeah I can get mine to do it if I pump the accelerator a few times and rev it hard and the gauge reads about 4 PSI and the BOV goes nuts, it works good to get chicks attention I find!

Yeah I thought it might have been that the turbo's are small, but I have seen other cars do it as well, not just the Supra. Glad it aint just my car that doesn't do it then Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

could it be the difference between a roller and a plain bearing (bushes) turbo?

the turbo needs heat to spool and free reving does not have much heat in it if you rev it up then back of and then rev it again it should have 4-5 psi coz you are getting the turbo spining first then adding the heat..

The turbo doesn't need heat, it needs exhaust gas and when the engine is under load (driving) it produces more exhaust gas then when it is in neutral and just revving without load. If this is the case then people would put a heater under their turbo to get more boost and it would be "fully sic hot turbo"

Depends on the size of the turbo I guess, my laser could make a massive "PTSCHT" and flutter away if I revved in neautral. My T60-1 is lucky to get anywhere atmo pressure (0 psig), let alone a positive pressure, when revving in neutral Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I can only get my turbo to 0psi. It still makes a loud flutter from my filter but no where near as much as if its under load..

Just short quick stabs of the accelerator will give you boost i hit 8 psi in neutral.
