Hey can't the avatar limits be increased to atleast 20kb ? I mean 7.8 is pretty small, surely it wouldn't be that much of a extra load on the server no?

may be able to increase it to a nice round 10 or something. It's not server load which is the issue, it's how long a page with 25 x 20kb avatars takes to load Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Bah whats an extra 300k, come on most of us that are paying members have Broadband anyway, I reckon it would be good as I got this .gif that I'm keen to use but is to big.

Don't these things cache once they've been seen once anyway?

You should be able to compress an image of 100x100 down to under 10kb easily, if not get someone to help you out! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Well not everyone will have 20k avatars and it would be mainly for ppl who have moving gifs plus an extra 10k here and there wouldn't put that much more of a load on the old dial up ppl and HEY! maybe it could be an incentive to stop living in the past and getting rid of dial up once and for all! Also reducing size of gifs makes it look chunky and grainy. >>;]

I just came in here to make a suggestion about increasing the pixel size of Avatars. 100 X 100 is tiny. Increase of kb size would be great too! Could have the extra size allowance for paying members only...? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

100x100 is quite large, there wouldn't be many other forums with a larger avatar size - most are smaller than that! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

i have adobe photoshop 8 and i make the image 100x100 but its still like 100kb so how can i reduce the file size without losing pic quality??

in photoshop go "file -> save for web", use JPG compression at about 60-70% and it should give you an excellent result on 'photos'. If your image has lots of solid colours you may like to try using gif instead though.

maybe you could have a different setting in the style chooser which doesn't load avatars and other graphics to speed it up for dial up users....

There is an option for disabling avatars already, but it's not a drama as long as people use reasonable sized avatars! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

they could be bigger, make it the same size as the tables underneath with the personal details (join date, location etc...), their 175 - 2 pixels of padding ps. the filesize doesnt need to change, i can get images that size and still fit the size limit Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I reckon increase to at least 15kb, my digital camera is on a medium quality setting, and when I reduce a pic down to 100x90 pixels, even on the very lowest quality in photoshop the smallest I can get them down to is 11.5kb. A few people have asked how I got my car in my avatar (which is my old one cause no pics of my new one will shrink enough), they have the same problem on lowest quality still cant get under 7.8kb. Just a suggestion, even if standard users have 10kb and official members have an extra 5 or 10kb. We don't pay our 10 or 20 bucks to get stuck with dodgy quality avatars Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
