Hey guys, well the 5 speed started to pack it on on sunday .......
The car still now drives and will go into all gears, you can still even down shift, but second sounds hidious, box screwed? Rebuild time? Possiblity of a bearing or something? Any ideas and suggestions would be good, Haven't yet had a chance to drain the oil and see what we can find .....
Not bad for my car that claims the lives of numerous auto's and manuals .......

Im in the same boat, its drivable, but you gotta be real careful with it, specially when going down to 2nd, it crunches if you arent nice and gentle. Feels pretty f****d. Whats the process for rebuilding or replacing it, if it needs it, and how expensive? Any help would be great for both of us...
mine does the same u can get reco ones from east comm wreakers. il look out for the price. there in melb though

Is this common? Mine sounds similar although it seems to be a master cylinder thing. I can't quick shift into 2nd or 3rd, there's a fair bit of resistance and if I try to overcome it the gears will grind slightly. Going from 1st to neutral, waiting a second then trying 2nd usually gets me a reasonably decent shift, nothing too great but. From talking to the local gearbox people I either need to bleed the clutch or replace the master cylinder. Pumping the clutch the fluid in the reservoir will swirl but the level doesn't drop, so I think I'm not getting the pressure I need to disengage the clutch properly, although going into 4th and 5th is good, as is going down, except into 2nd but it's not as bad as upshifting. I'm also going to try the 25% auto fluid and if all else fails I'll do the clutch, been in the car about 3 years now although there's no signs of it failing such as slipping. There's also a slight metallic grinding noise sometimes at low speeds, so I think a bearing is starting to wear, throwout or input shaft I hope, the easier ones to change.
I'm thinking it's just a bearing still on mine ...... Will finally get a chance to drain the oil this weekend and have a look if this ****ing rains leaves my sorry ass alone .....
rebuild time, allthough its expensive for parts! 2nd always goes first, they have a tendancy to chew the synchro. Youll probably find your input shaft bearing is rooted
I recently rebuilt my slave and gave the system some fresh fluid and a good bleed, has helped a bit, still 2nd is bad to get into, 3rd is better. I picked up some Nulon gearbox and diff additive today, will look at draining the box next week, see if there's any crap floating in there. The additive is supposed to quieten noises, make shifting easier (I'm hoping but it appears my 2nd gear synchro could be stuffed) and reduce wear by up to 50% (might buy me some time til I can afford a rebuild). Although the box was supposedly done about 3 years ago, I might get away with replacing just the synchros, I'll look into it and see how the oil change goes, using Fuchs oil. If no luck I'll just be careful, going to neutral and waiting before trying 2nd seems to work, goes in pretty well then, makes quick shifting a no go but.
