Hey guys... i went to AutoBarn last week to get a K&N Pod filter on special... they are only $80 brand new with a million mile warranty. The sales assistant there told me definately dont get one if im gonna put it in a VL.... I was very confused. He told me it would make the thing slower and put alot more pressure on the car...
just thought id ask someone that knows more about VL's than he ever will... is he full of **** or is he actually spot on? PM me if you can someone... thanx

he's spot on, the extra weight of a K+N pod filter (somewhere in the region of 100-200 grams) will definately put extra pressure on the car, because it's just extra weight you'll have to haul around. This will, in turn, make the car slower.
he told me to purchase like a vaccum cleaner hose and cut a whole in the air box and put one end of the hose joint to that and the other under the car facing forward. and buy a K&N Air filter for the air box, for a good cold air intake... if i did this. how bennificial would it be???
extremely beneficial! (http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=17106) every 1 degree celcius that you lower the inlet temperature, your car will gain 10kw at the rear wheels.
Disclaimer: Car may not gain 10kw at the wheels.
Disclaimer: my name is stockymc**** and i eat testicles and suck penis regularly.. my car is blown.. just like my **** when my b/f's on the end of it..
hahahahaha

i have done pretty much what the autobarn guy told you.
i took out the standard air intake and covered up the rectangle hole that was left
i cut a hole in the bottom of the air box and through the wheel arch
i bought a length of 80mm flexy pipe and a flange to cover the cut edge
using a couple of zip ties, secure one end of the pipe at the very front of you car
and bend the flexy pipe around 90 degrees and into the hole you cut in the airbox
cold air does make a differance
i hope this helps
It's true, i swear! 10kw gains per 1 degree inlet drop have been proven on a dyno a number of times!
Disclaimer: 10kw gains may not have been proven on a dyno.

Just a word of advice "DON'T LISTEN TO 95 % OF RETAIL ASSISTANTS WHO WORK AT PLACES LIKE AUTOBARN/SUPERCHEAP/REPCO ECT...." Reasons being they are exactly that RETAIL ASSISTANTS. I doubt your average associate is trained in mechanics or automotive engineering, otherwise they wouldn't be working at Autobarn. The motive of a retail assistant is to make sales and sound like they are familiar with the products, but most know f@ck all!
Generally your autobarn guy is on the right track pointing you to keeping the standard air box, cutting a hole with some pipe in the bottom, and using a K&N panel. for cold air. Do a search man! Heres all u should need to do the mod, if this isn't enough don't do it yourself! http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=17106
Basically that sh@t about a pod slowing a VL down, its only true if u are stupid enough to put it in a place where it sucks hotter less dense air(ie engine bay bear exhaust). U can put a pod on and get very good results. Have the pod located behind the frount bumper running pipe through guard (same as cold air thread metioned above), but piss off ur air box and run straight to the air flow meter. Probably better than keeping stand air box, however is much more defectable by police.
And well for his "puts the car under much more pressure", I don't know where to start with that load of bull sh@t. Hes got no idea about what hes f@cking on about! Its not the best thing having a pod sucking hot air. However it shouldn't make u motor or anything blown up or wear at double the rate. If u want advice a modifing talk to a mechanic or automotive engineer who has studied and works with performance engines, not ur autobarn salesman who just wants to sale u as much sh@t as they can.

i dont see how a pod filter can possibly help, sure it has more surface area but all that is, is more surface area to suck hot engine bay air in with. Spend around $140 and get a k&n panel filter then plumb that into a CAI set up, thats what i did, works best.
I have gone from a cheap $30 pod filter to k+n pod filter then to k+n panel, all filter set-ups have used a 100mm CAI through the guard and i believe that i obtained the best results from the cheapy pod filter compared to the k+n pod and panel.

I'm with u the cold air setup with a decent pod is slightly better than a k&n panel filter with cold air. I'm not sure about any difference between a K&n and cheap pod though. I'm currently using a cold air moded standard box, k&n panel, but only for legality reasons(Ie looks standard using factory air box).
Either CAI K&N panel, or CAI pod kicks arse over the factory setup. I don;t think theres much noticeable difference between pod or panel, though
who said they have more surface area? i very much doubt they do have more surface area, they would have around the same or a bit less, especially the cheaper ones cause they're smaller, they have access to more air cause they're not boxed in but in reality the bottlenose is at the filter, the filter is where the limit in air throughput is therefore there are no gains with a pod.
the cai technical thread is the best way to do it, put a k&n or bmc panel in the box and you'll be set, the engine will run noticably cooler too.
Also the cai is taking air from a high pressure part of the car, that means when doing 80 or over the air will be pushed in from the extra pressure, this is called ramming and is a proven technique, a cheapo pod will never beat this, and using cai with a pod in the box is also worse as the pod causes turbulance which causes backpressure which then limits the amount of air getting through.
so there u go!
