My calais seems to have developed steering thats so loose, basically any little pothole in the road jerks it around, and its so easy to turn the steering wheel, basically it just flops around and feels lose as anything (still works fine turning the wheels though). I know my steering rack leaks like a biatch, but this problem has only come up just recently?

maybe ur power steering pump is fcuked, does it make any weird noise? it can get wrecked over time but if you make the belt too tight on it it'll go bad real quick

yeah sounds like it is the rack - dammit, it's like the only thing which hasn't been replaced on this car... $325 trade in from repco :\

if it's just the rack end should only cost around $150-$200 fitted.

yeah this bloke at repco was telling me today the cheaper ones just have the seals and stuff replaced, but the expensive ones are full reconditioned units?

On a similar note, I've found the rubber boot on the left of my rack is split and there's a bit of power steering fluid coming out. Looks like the seal might be stuffed. I'm looking to replace the boot next week, can I do anything about the seal or is it too late? Left it on my old VL and it ended up sucking in air which stuffed the rack and blew the pump. $500 later......

The fluid coming out of it is a big problem - you need a new rack!

Don't tell me that, I'm too bloody poor. Is there a stop leak additive for steering?

Mine has been leaking for over a year, i put in some stop leak and it works a bit and slows it down, but it's getting really bad now. It's such a boring thing to have to replace- i want to spend $$$ on mods. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
