This is my pride and joy Anthony`s white 1988 VL turbo bt1.
I bought the car back in april 2004 in Townsville, North Queensland, which was in a pretty tired and standard state.
The clock had showed 213738kms but stopped not long after.
The bt1 on purchase, came with non power steering, the standard 3.45 LSD, standard auto, bilstein shocks and the bt1 interior options, and a 3" inch exhaust.
After the first week..me old rims were thrown on.. the 17" AMG Quakes in Hyper silver, wood grain steering wheel..
I had installed a Phantom Boost gauge, Kicker amp, pioneer headeck, 12" Sub, and 2 6x9`s in a customized blue velour parcel shelf.
I always had plans to modify this VL as my old N/A was pretty boring.. especially with the one wheeler !!
So next.. i decided to remove the old standard air box and replace it with a
K+N pod filter to get that little bit more air flow.
I still havent sorted out some sort of Cold Air Intake yet but is definetly next on the list.
Next the car was sent to Pedders for some new bushes in the front and rear and an adjustable panhard rod to centre the diff abit more accurate.
The VL was goin alright for now.. but i still insisted on giving it a service so i got some of those irridium spark plus and some new leads.
Then dropped the oil and replaced it with a fully synthetic mobile1 oil.. Now the dramas began to unfold...
First she started heating up bigtime (like in the H), blowin white smoke out the exhaust constantly, losing power the more i drove it, was always konking out...
So i took it to seek medical advice and the verdict was a blown head gasket, bugger all compression in number 5 ( cracked piston ) and the standard Turbo had a chip in the wheel and a big crack right down the throat of the exhaust housing.
So firstly.. the motor was sent to Repco for a full standard rebuild bored 20 thou, and then the turbo was off to Turbo Dynamics also for a rebuild to standard specs.
Also had to buy a new exhaust housing off the turbo because of the big crack which was beyond repairable.. that set me back $499 !!
So come October 3rd.. the mighty top end destroyer was back in action !!
Before road testing began tho.. i had to buy a few things like a new radiator, new water pump, timing belt, new hoses, new CAS, some coolant and 5 litres of Penrite running-in oil.
The bt1 was running pretty good in hot humid conditions up here in Townsville for the first week before the old fuel pump decided to kill it self.
The following weekend i bought a 500HP new bosch fuel pump and a fuel filter to go with. Since then.. the car has been running good but still there are a few little problems i still have to get looked at because i am not thaaat mechanically-minded.
Will let you guys know what was wrong, when i get it looked at.
Future plans include :- Front Mount Intercooler
Turbosmart BOV type 3
Electronic Boost controller
Either Microtech or Wolf 3D ECU
036 Injectors
Rebuild the LSD / 3.9s
5 speed conversion
Respray canary yellow
custom interior / aftermarket seats and buckets (rear)
Bigger brakes - Gold slotted rotors
Surge tank
Catch can
Polished rocker cover
Also I've decided to throw in a photo of my old blue naturally aspirtated RB30 aswell for the hell of it.
Cheers.
