guys i just bought my vl calais, its done a fair bit say 237000ks, lady owner never worked, same head same engine ect ect. I havnt been driving it because it needs a tune up, and bushes need replacing. I just start it up for 3 or 4 minutes everyday....today i started it up and i heard like this clicking noise coming from the head, i thought it was 1 of the valves but being no expert i decided to ask here, maybe someone to confirm it ect or at least tell me whats causing it, or whats happpening. As i accellerate the noise gets quicker just like a click click click. Now i know for fact that the oil needs replacing and theres a bit of sludge buildup in the head....Im getting her tuned up this weekend by a pro. The sound isnt there always...it comes and goes every say minute or 30 seconds or so....Does this mean ive done my head ??? IT doesnt blow smoke or anything just that ****ing noise scaring me!! So can anyone help me out ? Thanx in advance. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

that noise, without hearing it. sounds like your lifters. like u said, sludge build up and the lifters get sticky. use an engine oil change additive and put good quality oil in it

Yeah its just the lifters. Its ok to start and run it, drive it even, but don't flog it while its ticking. Give it an oil change and see if that fixes your ticking noise. If it does then its all good, but if it doesn't then maybe some of your lifters are worn out. Just see how the oil change goes and take it from there.

its safe to start up, i'de say the sludge is stopping the oil from getting to the lifters, if after an oil change the ticking doesnt stop i'de say u would hav 2 pull the lifters out and see if they're no good. really soft lifters or chipped ones can make a ticking sound, although if u dont really care it wont do any hard to leave them how they are, and you can replace them yourself if they need, fairly easy task, there's a tech post on how to do it

it could be ur injector pulsating, that is a perfectly normal noise, vlts made this noise out of the factory

If the noise was constant, it could be injectors. The fact that the noise comes and goes suggests something other than injectors (like lifters!).

well im not to sure to be honest, at 1st i thought the lifters were ok only to start her up today and hear them clicking again. Its got me abit worried as i had the engine tunedup on saturday, the oil was replaced and the head was cleaned from sludge by using some of that stuff u mix with the oil. The head is CLEANER than before but theres still abit of gunk in there...couldnt get it all out. So maybe thats causing it i dunoo....The older oil was as black as coal, but its using new oil now and the noise from the lifters is still evident.

The older standard lifters are noisy. If you look in a automotive manual, it says they have a run-out of about 90 seconds (in mine it does). So that 30 seconds or so is the sound of the last bits of oil leaving your lifters. I have that noise, not too worried about it. Its more noticable when the lifters have done some mileage too.

You are lucky if they only make noise on startup. One of mine clicks all the time once the engine has reached normal opperating temprature. This is fu(king annoying as its fairly loud and sounds terrible. I replaced 10 of my 12 last christmas and I'm still using 2 old ones ( 2 of the new ones I orded were knackered when I got tiem, sent them back and they magicly "dissapeared" ). Only thing is my old ticking lifters only ticked on cold startup, as the oid drained out of them when they are sitting for a while. My current ticking lifter only ticks after its reached opperating temp, not on cold startup. Anyone have any ideas why this is? ( sorry for hijacking your thread HOODLUM, but I thought it might help other people with lifter problems ) Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

My VLT has ticked at startup on and off for the last 4 years. Once it got bad like PipeBom explained. I ran an engine cleaner thru it and then ran Mobil 1 for a bit and they came good. By this I mean I actually drove it for a couple of hundred k's once it had warmed up to "push the good juice thru" and they sort of cleaned themselves out. Now 2 years later they are talking to me again. Around we go.

hmmm. Maybe they arnt as clean as they could be? I mean he did just pour the liquid in and well, god knows what how long he ran it for...i wasnt there. Maybe i should try pouring some of that cleaning **** down there, run it for a couple of hundred kms and flush the oil out again. Anyone recon that could be the prob>? It not cleaning it out good enough>

mate, this may sound like a long shot, but i had a very similar "clicking noise coming from my calais........ after replacing the lifters, the noise persisted. when i leaned into the engine bay to listen for the noise again, i leaned on the radiator shroud. the noise stopped....... the bloody fan was rubbing on the shroud. like i said though, may be a long shot.
