If I see anything sus - an alarm going off or someone sus standing around looking at the car, I'll stand back (if I'm not in a hurry which most of the time I'm not), if someone walks up to the car and appears to be breaking in, I'll walk up and ask what he/she is doing. I'll then ask for them to show me their license and if they do I will write down the license number, and their name. If they forgot their licence (I know this happens as I am always forgetting my wallet) I'll ask them to show me the keys for the car and if it did have an alarm I would want them to show me the button for it...

It's almost not worth it man... Do you really think they are going to show you their licence or keys if they were braking into it??? How do u know if they have a knife or something....
Nice thought, but do u really wanna get stabbed or bashed??? Then again I dunno what I'd do if I saw it happening myself... depends if I was with anyone..

Serious if you done that you will be the one laying on the road face down with a stab wound in your stomich.
"oh yeah heres my wallet... i got my license right here..." *stab*
If you wanna benefit anyone and not get harmed yourself, dont walk over.... get a good look of the bloke and call the cops.

Hmm, maybe a less direct approach.
Something like, thats a nice car you've got there mate, then ask some questions like, auto/ manual, how much did you pay etc.
Then just see if they slip up or if they look to see what transmission it is etc.
I doubt the guys gonna keep trying to break in after you've had a chat to him and are still in the area.. And the chat alone would help delay anything.
It'd take a true thug to stab someone for saying "Nice car mate"
Thats how it works with shoplifters anyway, if you notice they are up to no good you just walk over and ask if you can help them, usually they get nervous and walk off.

Let me start by saying I didn't make the topic, my bro did. He is a good bloke who cares very much for peoples cars (he was more pissed off about the attempt made on my car than myself). He is abit over zealous about this kind of thing.
But he really hates people who steal...anything.
But he agrees that what was typed is a bit off, he would get a good view of the person and take a photo with his phone and the number plate and go to the cop shop and ask if the car has been reported.

it's good to see that people are willing to look out for others cars, but that is a very direct approach. i like bexters's idea. i think it unlikey that they would try to break into the car if you went up to them and started talking about the car, the only thing is they might think that you are trying to get info on it to see if it's worth stealing or not!

Yeah I agree, the best thing to do is get a description of the guy, a camera phone would be better, the license number and go to the cop shop and ask if it has been stolen and give them the photo/description.

Perhaps- then you could have a stolen, stripped and possibly burnt to the ground vl and either an arrest or a description that matches 5000 other people in the town.
Prevention better then cure?

Hey like everyone has already said, I don't want to die for a car, I don't want someone to risk their lives for my car. While I prize my Commy, I wouldn't want someone to go and get themselves killed defending it. I would ask them what they were doing if I had mates around but by myself the consequences of doing something like this can get you killed. Sure if 5 of my mates were with me, we would all ask what they were doing and if they ran, we would run em down and beat the **** out of them. However by myself I wouldn't be game, a Knife or a Screwdriver can kill you.
But at least with a Photo, the cops have something to go on, maybe he was arrested before and they can cross reference it with previous thefts around the area.
Look I hate a Thief as much as the next guy, probably more, but there is a limit to what I will risk. If my car was close I might get my bat out and then ask them, but without that and or friends I wont risk getting killed.

31-10-04, 20:15 GMT+10#10 haha, It's just idea's bloke, don't have to go out and do it.
But what you and your brother are saying is all over the places, first he's saying that he'd go and ask for keys then he's saying get a picture or a description and now your saying you wouldn't risk getting killed.. Make up your minds.
Forgot to mention, I hope your in the car with that camera when you take the photo, I don't think a possible crim would be happy with getting his photo taken anymore then "nice car" would do.

No, my bro said he would ask for the keys, I said I would take a photo (if I had my Camera Phone or Digital Camera on me) or get a description if not, he has since seen "the light" and has come to the conclusion that he would not risk his life to save a car, while he would still take a photo.
You will have to forgive my bro, he has been drinking...
He used my username, I have told him to no longer do that which I hope he abides by. *I couldn't give him this user name cause I don't have another email to use*

31-10-04, 20:34 GMT+10#12 I'm pretty tired so I have probably typed stuff that don't make sense...I'll sort it out later. But in a nutshell, I would take a photo, with my Nokia 6600 if they were acting sus. If I were with my mates or had a baseball bat I might walk up but stay out of arms reach of him and ask him what he was doing. But I wouldn't go alone cause frankly...I don't want to die

01-11-04, 05:21 GMT+10#15 There's no perfect answer.
Prevention IS better than cure
Having insurance is important
No tracking system, alarm, or keyless entry system can be 100% guaranteed to prevent theft of your car or your car being broken into
VLs are very very easy to break into and to steal
We'd all be angry if our car was broken into or stolen
Don't leave CDs, your wallet, or other valuables in your car.
Consider that expensive wheels and aftermarket bits make your car more attractive to thieves as they can easily offload the parts
No car is so important that you should risk your life to defend it
Don't be a keyboard hero, be realistic and think before you type or act
