hey all
has anyone on here heard a vl's intake 'hum'?
its a hard one to explain if you havent seen it.
a couple of months back a friend brought around his friends VLT and it makes a constant hum from the pod filter, if you unplug the afm, the hum goes. i thought this was strange, considering that it ran fine (afm wasnt faulty). the noise was also there before the pod went in, apparently. on this car, the noise was always there at idle, and disappeared as soon as you passed around 1200rpm.
now, i have noticed that on my car, when decellerating, i sometimes get an odd hum sound. i know my diff isnt that great so i just thought it was that.. however today i heard it when sitting still after i gave the engine a little rev (to 1500rpm or so). so i got under the bonnet and sure enough, if you rev it to around 1500 and then release it, as the revs come back down, it hums from the airbox. i havent tried disconnecting my afm yet but i'd be willing to bet it'd shut up.
my car runs great too.. any ideas??
might swap the afm with my brothers n/a :P
thanks

wat kinda boost do u run ? and wat kinda turbo have u got ?
probably just air fighting in the pipes...
hey.. go stand at the back of ur car and put ur head near ur exhaust, tell ur mate to give it a rev and then shut the car off.. soon as he shuts it off, stick ur ear next to the pipe and listen..... BEST NOISE EVER.
yeah mine does the same thing...i just put it down to air getting through the t/b when it's closed and making like a wistle/hum. It did it when i had the pod on and with the stock airbox. It only does it when the t/b's closed, at low revs after i've backed off. eg 2000rpm and i pull my foot off the pedal fast-ish, it'll do it.
doesn't effect how the car perfoms though...not that it really performs

mine is totally stock bar a catback exhaust and 9psi boost. its a 5spd.
it performs quite nicely too, its great
yes it only does it when the throttle is shut. but on decelleration it'll do it until you get back on the gas, if you rev it at idle its only on for a second.

If you put the factory airbox on with the intake tube that sits just near the headlight you will find that the noise goes away. All VLT in fairly good condition will make the noise you descibe. I have found if the car has a heap of KM's on it or a low comp motor they don't make the noise. A lot of the time it also wont do it when the engine is cold. Nothing to worry about.
