Hey iv just got an autometer oil pressure gauge and i want to know how i hook it up. I have no idea where 2. My car is a bt1 and so it has the tacho dash with the oil gauge (but im installing this autometer one cos the original gauge is rooted). Pretty much i dont know what to do, i know plenty of members on this site have oil pressure gauges mounted in / on their cars and i was hoping someone could direct me with what to do. Yes i did a search. Im getting the gauge this week off a mates mate, im pretty sure it is mechanical, rather than electronic, this means i can just wire it into the old gauge's cabling doesnt it? anyones help would be great, anyones abuse would even be fine.

what i did was remove the oil pressure sender and get the oil pressure signal from there.the gauge should have a fitting that will go straight in.its 1/8 bsp tapered thread im sure.to wire it up you need a wire from your lights and an earth. i get my signal from the dimmer switch on the dash. this way when you dim the lights the gauge dims too.i cant remember which wire it is but one of them will dim when you slide the switch.use a test light to find it.splice into that wire and run it to the gauge.use a fuse if you like(i didnt lol). now just earth the other wire and your done

sorry im a bit of a noob, i got most of that except what a "1/8 bsp tapered thread" is. By "wire from your lights", is that the power cable? how did u work ur way around to behind the dimmer switch? how much of the dash came apart? thanx heaps

the thread is the same as the old sender unit.the gauge should have this with it. if not just take your old sender to pirtek or another hose shop and get the right fitting with the right thread. yes the wire from your lights is the power.to get to it just remove the little panel on the lower dash.manuals are easier than autos cause the auto computer gets in your way.i have found a spare dimmer switch to be worth its weight in gold as you can test the wires easily without removing your real switch. none of my dash came apart

kk ta heaps duz il get back to ya when i get the gauge and hit my first wall. Yes mine is auto. I can just see myself having trouble feeding the wire to the dimmer up to the gauge which is at the top of the dash arg.

hay mate i recently installed some autometer gauges, have you got the sender unit with ur new oil pressure gauge. if u dont have an autometer one it will give you a wrong reading. there about $75 for the sender unit. you can hook it up to ur origanal oil pressure sender but dont know how good the reading will be.

im not sure what it comes with yet as i havent picked it up. Aparently it is new and still in the box, its an "ultra lite pro comp" or something, does the sender come in the box as well? Duz that would be so ****en good if you could do that, if u got pics would be incredible. I got the gauge for $80 brand new unopened. I looked em up and they cost like $140 in stores so yeah im pretty happy.

How do you hook one up if you want to keep the stock guage working?

Brown is power, black is earth obviously. Brown is not the dimmer switch but constant power but realistically why would you want to lower the lights on you guage?? The oil pressure switch is located about 50-60mm behind the oil filter. It's a b1tch to get out but it can be done. It is about 40mm round and same in depth with a wire on the end of it. Hope this helps. I have photos if needed for the location but I've had trouble downloading them but if you still have trouble I'll email them to you.

Wait a minute, mechanical gauge inside car = illegal..

yeah i know but really there are about 20 things illegal about my car that are far more obvious and far harder to reverse than removing 1 gauge, it would also take a fair good copper to know that autometer sport comp series are mechanical. From the looks of the 2nd pic it appears it would be pretty much impossible to get around to it to plug it in! is it possible without removing a WHOLE lot of stuff from the engine? thanx heaps guys.
