Hey I'm changing my water pump and it appears I have to remove the crankshaft pulley, just wondering what's the easiest way to stop the engine turning over to remove the bolt?

I removed the starter motor, and then jammed a big screwdriver in the teeth of the flexplate to stop it from turning. I guess it would be similar for a manual?

you need a harmonic balancer pulley. also you need a large one cause with a small one the balancer will break almost every time. i got a large one and i put the arms around the very back of the balancer. havent broken one since. spray some wd40 all over the shaft now and let it soak in.this will help when you pull it off.

i use a steering wheel puller, i screw it in to some of the screw holes that are used for the power steering pulley to bolt on.

ended up buying a harmonic balancer puller that works how natho described. only cost $30, now just gotta put the new water pump in and all should be good.
