In the next 12 months (I hope), I want to redo the engine in my berlina. It's a standard rb30 n/a, 5 speed auto. I was thinking of going to a turbo, and putting a rear disc axle on too. What do I need to know? I know next to nothing about turbos. I've read through the guide posted in the non-turbo section. What are people's recommendations here? I've got a few specific questions and if anyone has anything else to offer, that'd be great. What would be better a)self rebuild or b) buy and fit a replacementWhat sort of extractors would be recommended (or are they not for a turbo)? What sort of turbo would be suitable (not looking for an uber super dooper turbo, just one for a bit of fun)?what other considerations do I need to think about with this sort of work to be done?what are wastegates and blowoff valves and oil catchcans etc?Or does someone know of a source that I can go and read up on this all myself?Does anyone know of a good (and resonably priced) workshop/parts source in Brisbane?
As you can see, I really know nothing at all here. I'm in the dark totally. But I do have a fair degree of mechanincal ability and wouldn't worry about having to do this all myself.

What would be better a)self rebuild or b) buy and fit a replacement? i would say a rebuild
What sort of extractors would be recommended (or are they not for a turbo)? im pretty sure pacemakers r the way to go?
What sort of turbo would be suitable (not looking for an uber super dooper turbo, just one for a bit of fun)? id say t04
what other considerations do I need to think about with this sort of work to be done? read the turbo conversion thread, theres alot of stuff involved.
what are wastegates and blowoff valves and oil catchcans etc? blow off vavles are designed to release overloads of psi and/or left over psi i think? im pretty sure wastegates do the same thing, they jst dont go pshhhh ?
Or does someone know of a source that I can go and read up on this all myself?
Does anyone know of a good (and resonably priced) workshop/parts source in Brisbane? no sorry

and oil catch cans r designed to catch the oil out of the turbo so used oil doesnt go back into the turbo. or something like that :P

The easiest and probably most economical way is to buy a complete turbo engine and drop it in yourself...much easier...
extractors to fit a turbo are usually a custom job, i am not sure if pacemaker even do these(i may be wrong there)
87calais has some on his car that he bought of a guy that visits this site sometimes and they were over $800
as for turbo, the easiest conversion would be a t3 or a hybrid t3/t4. but if you bought a complete engine you would be getting the lot, including computer.
If you only have a 2 core radiator i would advise a 3 core
A brake upgrade is a must, cos once you can go fast its a bit too late to worry about stopping, cos you wont. I would even suggest doing that first.
Then you may have trouble keeping gearboxes up to it as both auto and manuals are different from na to turbo.
Maybe even look around for a **** looking VLT with good mechanical(hard to find but thats the way i did mine) that way you will have all the parts you need and can take photos of how it all goes back together.
Here is a list of all the parts you will need to do it all from scratch and some of these could be expensive and hard to find. http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=4362
