Would back cutting the turbine on a N/A conversoin allow the engine to run higher boost without detonating? The theory behind this is that with a back cut turbine there would be less pressure in the exhaust before the turbo and it wouldn't get as hot raising the threshold of detonation. The N/A has higher compression than a turbo block so lag from back cutting the wheel wouldn't be a consideration. Would it work?

nice theory but it wont work.well it could to a degree but not in the way you think. the only way it could help stop detonation is by reducing exhaust gas pressure(as you said) and therefore promoting better cylinder scavenging.this would be especially helpful if your running a na camshaft as the greater valve overlap lets exhaust gas return into the combustion chamber creating a "dirty" inlet charge and inducing detonation. as a rule you should always try and have the inlet pressure higher than the exhaust pressure but this is rarely achievable.using the very small t03 rear housing your always going to have a high exhaust pressure. now the reason the turbo's air gets hot is because when air gets compressed it creates heat.there is no way around this.that is why its better to run the lowest boost level you can to achieve the desired power level.a bigger turbo will pump the same amount of air at a much lower boost level than a smaller one will, so its air will be much cooler, and therefore better so back cutting the exhaust wheel is good. it wont hurt(except for making it spool up slower) but your still going to be pumping hot air unless you get the front wheel upgraded aswell. a highflow turbo running lower boost is what you looking for i think aswell as a camshaft with zero valve overlap i hope that makes sense Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
