Hey all, I've just finished rebuilding my RB30et motor, I sent the block out to get it bored and decked and cleaned, when I picked up the bare block it didn't have any welsh plugs in it, because the machinist removed them to clean it. The only problem being that he can't remember which plugs are supposed to be left out. The motor is already back in the car so I'm not going to change them now but at this stage I've left out: On the exhaust side of the motor there are 6 external plugs for the coolant passage, behind them there are another 6 internal ones in front of the water jackets. If I were to put them all in there would be no way coolant could circulate, so I left the last 3 out so the coolant will get a decent flow to the back of the motor(which runs a little hotter). Also left the one behind the thermostat out, because that would block coolant flow totally. Just wondering if anyone knows which ones between the coolant passage and waterjackets are supposed to be left out?

My memory is pretty vague, but i cant remember any internal plugs on the exhaust side. The plug behind the thermostat is definately supposed to be there - it does not block flow totally.

If you leave the internal ones out, then water won't circulate in the best pattern to cool your motor properly. It will probally just go around in circles instead of getting forced past the cylinders and then back through the radiator. Without them it will cool worse, not better. Rip it out and do it properly or you are just asking for trouble. Mick

man welsh plugs r there for a reason so if theres a hole there for a plug then fill it up man for like someone else said the water just goes around in circles and ull burn out the front of the engine coz not enough water will get there not o mention u wont be able to get rid of the air bubbles when bleeding the system

I can't put them all in and can't leave them all out, has to be somewhere in between, only nobody I've spoken to knows.

Do you know why nobody you have spoken to knows which plugs to leave out? Because you don't leave any of them out! haha

Because you don't leave any of them out! haha I'd say it's more likely that nobody has touched any of the internal ones, there isn't much reason to, if they had a leak you would never know. If I had have pulled them out myself I'd be O.K cos I would know whether or not a plug goes in the hole. Why will it block coolant flow totally? Because I can't see any other way for the coolant to get from the coolant passage to the coolant galleries other than through these holes that look like welsh plugs should go into. If you saw the coolant passage with all the external plugs out you might understand what I'm talking about.

I saw my block when it was completely bare, and I'm no closer to understanding which ones you want to leave out.
