That's because he probably could not afford the proper ACL forged pistons and used the cast crap instead.
The ACL forgies go for around $1,200 a set, not cheap. And I have seen them myself very high quality, Someone said to me they are made by Mahle but the packageing has ROSS lables, So I'm guessing they are made by Ross and boxed in ACL boxes.
ACL don't make forged pistons in Australia they are made in the USA.

I think at the moment they are using Ross but will be using Mahale in the near future.

don't use ACL pistons. ive heard a fair few bad stories, i seriously wouldnt even consider them. do you research before you buy forgies cause they arent cheap. call a few workshops to get advice.

Well that's what I'm led to believe.
Allso Mahle just bought ACL out, found that out the other day, Not so much an Aussie company anymore, just like everything else.

15-10-04, 21:31 GMT+10#12 I'm running ACL Forgies.
$1200 trade.
Come in a Pretty box with Larry Perkins face plastered all over it, and a warning about not for street use.
They are visibly different to the ACL Forgies in a Freinds RB30T which are of an unknown age, but may suggest manufacturer change.

I think you are confused with ACL Cast pistons, when they fall apart in your hands that is the broken ring lands
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I beg to differ here.
Forging metal is just a process to make the material properties stronger. If the pistons have dodgy machining, thin ring lands and are not tollerenced exactly then they will fail quicker than a standard piston. I have heard many stories of engine builders that have built an engine up and found the piston to be scuffing the bore due to dodgy tollerencing either by the machinest or piston manufacturing company.
Not all forged pistons are created equal. While the inexperienced and magazine mechanics might think that "Martin Donnon said forgies..... omg i gotta get a set now (*&!@#E@!" real engine builders will source a forged piston that is quality and accurate.
If i was in the market for forgies, ide be doing a lot of homework to see which company is doing what kind of piston and what features are they incorpoerating. Paying an extra $25 bucks a piston and to know its quality isnt much in the end when it will save you thousands in the long term.
