Hey guys, finally starting to get some prices for a rebuild as its getting annoying and I'd rather a working box and no money then heaps of money and a dead box.
Diagnosis: Well, in Neutral, no uncommon noises.
Any gear with clutch in, no uncommon noises.
1st-5th when driving, intense whine coming from the box, mostly noticeable in second when driving beside an object that bounces the sound back at ya
Was always a bit difficult to get into second, nothing impossible, just grabbed a touch, so .. Syncro's?
As for the whining noise, bearings? Also noticed that when going up hills or whenever the car is put under load, you get more of a bearing noise then a whine, raspy squeaky noise, shocking really.
So I'm guessing Seals, Syncro's and a Bearing kit? Sound good?
Hopefully its nothing anymore serious.
I also get the clunk when clutch has been placed in, only when moving so I've put that down to tailshaft destroying another cv, so thats a seperate case, getting that rebuilt/ balanced and hopefully a warranty..
Anyway, to my point of this thread, for all people that have rebuilt their mx7's with the above mentioned parts, bearings, seals and syncro's, how much were you charged for parts and labour.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I'm contemplating it, especially after buying a shagged mx7 already.. But If I do I'll be grabbing it in a half cut so I get the engine with it. Hopefully if I can get the box done for a fairly cheap price I'll stick with it.
I wouldn't mind an r33 box, but at the moment its not worth the hassle.

Im gunna say 1st of all do a search, this topic has been covered soooooo many times.
and second the hard casing on the main input to main cluster gear will be chipped or worn off, ill bet the noise is almost gone in 4th gear!

The bearing noise I'm talking about? It's there in all gears, probably moreso in fourth.
And yeah I know its been covered but when it comes to actual rebuild costs theres so many threads where nobody has gotten an answer, or where they've strayed from the point, so I was kinda starting a new one to get everybody thats had a reconditioned mx7 to come in and get it right and accurate.
Really really hoping its not the mainshaft - Apparently you can get them custom made, but I'm guessing the cost would be huge.

09-10-04, 07:02 GMT+10#10 its really too hard to get an accurate cost on here, all depends on the person doing the quote on the day. I have had quotes from about $650 to about $1200 just for a basic rebuild, and have had up to $300 difference from the same company, just different people doing the quotes. Make sure you ask whats involved too , make sure they are going to lap all the synchros and find out if they are standard bearings they are fitting, or higher tolerance bearings that will take more punishment.
Your best bet is to go and see a few shops in your area that do this sort of work and have a good talk to them about it and get quotes off them.
Cheers

Can't argue with this point, mine is the same, and finding a replacment main cluster gear is like finding rocking horse ****.
I would never buy an MX7 again. I would go for a newer R33 box everytime. Seems to be a common problem, wether its high km's, abuse by owners, wrong oil, hard to say...
To get a bearing kit put through it is around $600
To get syncros replaced as well, add another $400 odd.
You won't get a full rebuild by a pro shop for any less than about 1K.
And you could get it rebuilt, it will shift and run fine, but still be noisy due to the hard casing on the main cluster being worn.
Buy a nice low k R33 box,
or if you aren't running to much power,
fit a good condition MF5 or RB20 box, for a more cost effective approach.
Only my 2c

09-10-04, 21:16 GMT+10#12 if it aint doing it it neutral its more than likely not bearings as the g/box is spinning but making the noise in gear sounds like the hardenings gone. drop ya oil and it might look all metallically

09-10-04, 21:21 GMT+10#13 my mate works in a massive gear manufacturing factory. i might ask if he could make some main imput gears

09-10-04, 23:31 GMT+10#14 If you look at this picture, the hard casing usually wears off the "main gear" and "counter drive gear" gears.
Atleast it was on mine anyway....
So it doesn't matter what gear your in, if the clutch is out, (i.e front part of gearbox spinning), its going to make noise no matter what gear you are in.
The noise will dissapear if you press the clutch in because you disconnect the gearbox from the motor, so its not spinning.

10-10-04, 01:35 GMT+10#16 If its going to be around 1000 for a rebuild then I'm definately gonna grab a 33 box.. Anyone interested in grabbing one aswell?? Buy 10 get it cheaper type deal ??
Stupid mx7.. Go from a perfectly sound MF5 to a gay, notchy, noisy, trash mx7, and get a busted tailshaft in the process..
