Hey all, havin a few gearbox issues..... Car is a 3 litre N/A 5 speed VL wagon. When sitting on idle, gearbox is making a rasping noise. Clutch in or out doesnt make a difference, however when i put the car into gear with the clutch depressed the noise stops. When driving, the box sounds horrible, same sorta noise as on idle but louder. when in fifth gear it also makes an intermitent, very loud, squeaking noise. Have spoken to a few local gearbox shops, one guy said thrust bearing and spigot bush, another said the whole box needed a rebuild. Am i better off rebuilding the box i have or sourcing a replacement from the wreckers? Need to get this sorted as cheap as possible, otherwise i'll never get the torana finished!

I can near guarantee its the input shaft bearing which means u might as well run a whole bearing kit through the gearbox while ur at it Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yeah I agree with Morgz85, sounds like the input shaft. You could get a Wrecker box but it might have the same problem, then you spend the next 6 months playing Musical Gearboxes. Get it rebuilt, should be quite as a mouse then.

How difficult are these boxes to rebuild? My grandad is a retired toolmaker (worked in holden NZ engineering dept), and is pretty set up tool wise. If i were to get the necesary parts is this the kinda job we could do ourselves?

I guess you could, if you have a work shop manual or something. Still I think with all the power that goes thru the thing you'd be better off geting someone to do it professionaly. Plus that way they can fix anything else thats shagged in it (cluster, syncros etc...) Just my 2c

just a warning that parts for these things are bloody expensive and hard to find. If you only need a bearing kit through it you'll be right though Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Hope its just bearings! Box is comin out tomorow, will open her up and have a look. May be in luck tho, just spotted a Royale for sale on the side of the road, "Suit parts". Hopefully its a manual so i can pinch the box, and all the luxo bits!
