the VL hasnt sounded quite right for a while so i thought id check to see if the exhaust was leaking. i put a wet rag over the end of the exhaust, totally blocking it, and looked under the car. couldnt see any exhaust coming out anywhere, but the car seemed to idle just as happily as it usually does. i was expecting it to start idling like **** and perhaps even cut out is this what should happen? cheers

aswell as being stupid, that isnt even accurate i could have a hole the size of a 20c piece in the exhaust and there would still be enough exhaust gas go through the pipe and into the car to kill me cheers for the reply thou

Maybe put the rag back in and listen for the exhaust escaping somewhere else?

for starters you will not block the exhaust with a rag.if you do block the exhaust totally the car will not run.this method can be used like an immobiliser. put a hose from the exhaust into your car, and see if you fall asleep... thatll tell ya if its leaking hahahaha lmao

yeh true, 10zvl but if he was that dumb, you'de be at fault for his death, but it would have been more funny if it was accurate though. wot does your exhaust sound like titicaca? if its a vibrating or a buzzing sound and you have a baffled muffler that would mean you have loose maffles in the muffler, another idea would be to pout your car in a garage/shed and lead the exhaust fumes outside (using some type of hose if possible), then wait for a while and see if you smell fumes inside, after that you would just have to get under there and look for the hole

I'd check the manifold first, these things are known for breaking studs, more towards the rear of the motor I think. Mine did the last one, cost me $50 to get someone to remove the end from the motor. I could hear that it was leaking though, definite change in noise under the bonnet. Pretty much anywhere there's a join, there could be a leak if the bolts have come loose. I also had trouble with my factory manifold where it joined the engine pipe that runs to the cat. One surface wasn't dead flat so it wasn't sealing properly, kept blowing out the maniseal crap I used. Ended up getting some pacies.

or if you have an exhaust tip, you realise they're not 100% welded, they're just spot welded on, they're not sealed.
