computer says my CTS has had it, which doesnt surprise me after seeing the layer of sludge in the coolant overflow tank. i was hoping somone could tell me where it is, and what i would pay for a new one. im assuming its just a case of screwing it out and whacking a new one in? i had a read of my max ellery manual (useless) and it keeps refering to the coolant temp sender unit. is this the same thing? cheers

Coolant temperature sensor is the yellow plug near where the top radiator hose inserts into the intake manifold/head. Unscrew it, screw a new one in. You might also find that it's not actually the sensor, but the wiring to it that is the problem.

Green wire i think.

cheers would still like to know what the effects of a dodgy coolant sensor would be. i mean, the car still seems to run fine also, my VL is an auto, and i know it wont kick into overdrive until the engine is warm. does this set temperature come from coolant or oil? i would have thought oil

I replaced my CTS. A replacement was around $70 from Repco. My ecu also said mine was faulty. Since changing it i've noticed a decrease in fuel consumption.
