i have just got a new head unit to replace the tape deck and was wondering if i should be putting a fuse on the constant 12V wire? if so, what size do you use? same as what the head unit is supposed to draw, or add on 10% or something? also, i checked all the wires from the old harness with a multimeter, and there doesnt seem to be a constant 12V, but i just read another thread that suggested there should be? i would have thought since the tape deck was all anologue it wouldnt need a constant supply? in this case, should i be running a wire from the head unit straight to the possitive battery terminal, or is there a near by wire i can tap into? i would have thought threading a wire through the fire wall would be a pain in the ass? cheers

All the wires you need are in the harness(as used by the stock cassett deck). You dont need to put a fuze in the constant 12v either cos its got one in the fuze box. Just check all the fuzes are good and check all the wires again.

checked the fuse and then tested all the wires again only wire with any voltage was the accesories one, which obviously only did something when the ignition was on. cant see why they would bother with a constant 12V for an anologue radio. its very unlike holden to think ahead and put one there incase someone wanted to upgrade. did the calais come with a digital one? cheers

The stock headunit I have is a digital one, but it was hooked up in my exec and I must admit I had some trouble finding the constant in the exec as well (the radio didn't hold memory, so I presume it never had one)! I just ran a wire form the battery to the headuni, and chucked a 5 amp fuse about 20cm from the battery end of the wire (you can get the blade style fuse holders for a few bucks). Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

battery to head unit would be a real prick wouldnt it? having to feed through the fire wall? i had a quick look and it seemed near on impossible i have a brake controller which has a constant 12V so i was thinking i would tap into that. just not sure what fuse, if any, is connected to it. dont want to connect it all up and instantly blow it. cheers

yeah there should be hole in the firewall to the right of the brake booster, probably has a crap load of other wires going through it, just stick it through there. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

couldnt find any holes in the fire wall so i spliced it straight into the brake controler. it all seems to work well. slightly better than the original tape deck didnt put a fuse in so i might have to look at doing that cheers guys Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Keep looking. There is a wire that is a constant 12V supply. In my one I think it is grey. Trace the wires back to the plug up behind the dash, near the glove box. Unplug the plug and test those ones. There will be a constant 12V. You may have to re arange the wires on the plug so you can use it but.
