hey ppls, around my area a bit of theft has been happening where thieves get into early commos and use a shifter to turn the ignition lock with, hence the early commos have that bit of metal sticking up so when u turn the key u can grip to that. so a good tip i say is to cut it off so it stops these turds stealing our cars

without that bit of metal your gunna risk snapping your key of using it to turn the barrel, i know mines bent pretty bad and i doubt it would take much to snap it off - then goodluck trying to get it back out.... I think i will keep it and just go some other messures - Besides if thats not there they can just use a big flat blade or something else to turn it.

I think it is harder than you think. I was on holidays and the key must have been chipped somehow so it wouldturn the ignition barrel anymore. And i had a full box of tools there. You name the tool I had it. But I still couldn't steal my own car.

guys leave the ignition barrel the same the barrel isnt the weak point it is the mechanism that connects to it... just install a good alarm system and or one that has a pager system so u know if someone is attempting to steal it. or a few well hidden kill switches. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

i think it is a good idea but we can also put a kill switch to cut off the fuel system

Is it true that noone has stolen a car with a Cyclops alarm for over 10 years? Tho if someone really wants your car then they can tow it away.

When someone tried to steal my car. They had a VL key and it still would not start. The pushed the little metal thing on the barrel all the way around and still didnt start it.... So i think it just depends really... Not one VL key besides my own can start my car. However i can start my mates VL with my key...

As vlred stated .. full metal jacket ... if theyre going to take the car, the full metal jacket stops it ... I think it was developed by the RAA (SA's RACV) and another company ... info found here .. http://www.raa.net/page.asp?TerID=170 'The Full Metal Jacket is a unique theft deterrent device suitable for VK, VL, VN and VP Commodores (and Toyota Lexcens) that protects the vehicle's steering lock and ignition switch. ' Says the price for the jacket is 137$ supplied ( not fitted ).. Its like it says .. a full metal jacket that goes around the ignition barrel area that prevents theives from doing their normal job on the barrel. That said , if your barrel etc isnt good , its well worth to get a new one aswell, just to be on the safe side .. that way , less keys will *work* in your car due to the barrell wear. Ross

has anyone got a picture of this so called "full metal jacket"? it sounds interesting and in conjunction with a decent alarm it should do wonders.

it covers you ignition barrel so theives can't lever out the barrel. it also covers the ignition wires so the car can't be hot wired. i don't have any pics. just do a google search, you may find some somewhere.

I can start up my other VL just by turning the thing that sticks up.
