Woo hoo- my first serious mod
spent the weekend transferring the battery to the boot to make way for cooler piping. Ended up being a bigger job than I thought. Didnt help having the wrong tools. Still a relatively easy mod and a good job to get me started.
Just had to tell everyone

Shopping for parts took the longest- People in the motor industry are an unhelpfull lot.
Repco:
- 6m 245 amp cable- about $40 (only needed 4.5m)
- plastic battery tray- $7
- earth cable (battery to body)- $18
- assorted connections- $20
- isolator- $15
Bunnings:
- Drill bits- $15
- tech screws- $12
- Clips to fasten to the underside of car- $10
- drill adapter for tech screws- $12
- strap- $7
- assorted nuts and bolts (of which I only used a couple) $10.00
and the final touch- a battery from a 5 series BMW- retail for about the $140 mark but got a bit of a discount from a mate. It has a breather box covering all of the little yellow screw things conected to a clear hose that I put through a hole in the floor- voila- legal venting to atmosphere.
The battery also runs a huge 600 amps.
Multimeter check- perfect- no drop at all from front to back.
If I knew what I wrote above I could have done it on a saturday- as it was it took me two days. Also could have been quicker if I had not got blind on Saturday evening in the shed by myself.
I also bought a 1350kg trolly jack from Supercheap for $30!!!!!!!!
Anyway- good easy mod for the technically deficient vlt owner. Give it a go
As you look in the boot there is a piece of metal on the left running vertical from the top of the boot to the left hand tub (looks like it is there for reinforcement). It already has a hole in it. I scraped the paint off and bolted it on there.
Under the bonnet I drilled a hole on the tub and scraped the paint away and simply bolted the original earth on there.
good stuff mate
but if you want it to be legal, you will have to get a light blue triangle and place it on the body to show fire crew that the battery is in another location.
well done
probably should do the blue triangle but I am focusing on keeping it a sleeper. I figure the triangle will be a bit of a giveaway. I'll think about that one.
Cheers
I think you will find that the triangle is for racing only..... You will need a permit to put it in the boot though, and there are regulations for that

craig: youre correct...you DONT need a blue triangle on the boot. i got the 'battery in the boot' put on my permit list when i got everything done at the pits.
the inspectors said nothing about the battery being in the boot, it was put on the permit list at my request cause i didnt want any trouble in the future if i was pulled over.
as long as the battery holder is secured and that the lid is tied down then theres really no dramas
And last weekend I mounted my cooler.....
and then drove backwards off a kerb.
doh, anyway all is good. I mounted one of those RHK coolers, took a day fluffing around with incorrect tools and dodgy fabrication of brackets by bending them in between my paving bricks and eventually got it looking bloody good
total $30 and a bit of skin and blood
I am off to a mates in the next couple of weeks to weld up the plumbing with his TIG.
ps. I also sprayed the cooler black
